2nd gen (Sandy Bridge - SB) vs 3rd gen (Ivy Bridge - IB) one of the main difference is - with IB, you have a built in USB 3.0 support whereas with SB, it needed external USB 3.0

Katthi:

Also SSd does not fail as HDD

Reliability of SSD/HDD:

When SSD fails, it just fails. in most cases, there would not be any warnings and you have a very little chance for recovery.

whereas, in most of the HDD failure cases, you will hear grinding sounds as warnings. Also, in certain types of failures, you may be able to recover partial data.

So, in case of SSDs, it is very important to keep a backup of what goes on it.

Katthi:

Is not mother board has slots for HDD?

At same time is it not mother board has supporting processors?

Laptop mobo are more tied to processors than desktops..

All it matters from processor perspective is what chipset it has and how many max SATA ports it supports. Then, it is upto motherboard manufacturers to decide how many slots they want to have.

Typically, a 15" laptop mobo will have 1 HDD support (may be one more mSATA).
most of the 17" laptop mobos will nowadays have 2 slots.

FYI - you can use a 3rd party caddy to replace CD ROM drive with a GDD/SSD also.

FYI - my machine has 1 mSATA, 2 9.5mm SATA slot (can fit most of the SSD or HDD) and I also bought a caddy to replace my DVD drive. So, currently I have 1 SSD, 2HDD and have mSATA slot free. will buy one after they get cheaper.

Simba:

In a laptop there is usually one 2.5" internal HDD SATA bay. You can put legacy (mechanical) drive or hybrid or SSD in that slot. I don't think you can put 2 drives there.

------------

It really does not matter if it were SSD or HHD. what matters is if it is SATA or IDE.

You can have both SSD or both HDD or a mix.

FYI - SATA II vs SATA III does not matter. They all fit in SATA Drive.

Vasista:

You can do that but there are some issues with that. People say Operating system would not utilise SSD if it is not installed again.

most of the core i third generations mother boards comes with 2slot.. 2nd generation i need to check .

I remember my last 2nd generation laptop came with 2 slots.

Ok. That's funny.

3rd gen. processor ki mobo ki enti relation? You can put any processor on the mobo. What is a processor got to do with hard drive bay? It depends on the lappy casing. Even mobo would care what is connected on the interface.

Show me a link.

laptops with 2 slots in not usual. Usually people replacing the dvd drive with SSD drive. I did the same with my macbook pro. Dvd drive slot is slower than the regular hard drive slot some times.

hybrid helps bootup speeds, but your other application response time would not improve. I would keep OS, Office, any IO intensive applications on SSD.

I am not keeping up to date with technology. Can you point to me to a lappy that has 2 slots for hard drives? Thx.

Galod.

I do not understand your question.. SSD or HDD both will have same pin they would support both. You can place either of them in the slot. Current Laptops comes with 2 slots. First slot will be HDD which come default, second slot you can fill with SDD ..

You have to install windows again on second one. I experienced pretty good improvements on booting and application loading and saving.

entha SSD konna, software still matters. Windows boot time is way longer thn mac OS on similar hardware. you will see a relative performance increase for windows but not a lot.

Galodu,

I got laptop without ssd and later i got 256gb SSD from best buy for 130$ during deals and reinstalled my windows in SSD. It is too fast man.

You have to store files and music in normal HDD and application and operating system in SSD.

SSD would be much faster in booting and application loading/running. Also SSd does not fail as HDD

I don't believe this hybrid drive concept. The spinning drive is bottleneck for the spped of flash drive. I don't this it allows you to see them separate drives to separate OS and data.

There are not disadvantages. very fast, i think it is reliable too. I have been using at least 4 SSDs in the past 2-3 years, yet to see one failed.
