Humpty_dumpty:But not naturally anukuntunna
you mean, the US style education? parents ki awkward gane untadhi but pillalaki emi farak padadhu kadhaa. they dont know the alternative options. ee kumaon aithey pure desi anxiety. 6 yrs ki india lo pillalu two digit multiplication sethunnaru, ikkada inkaa addition ye start kaaledhu. basic gaa peer pressure. by the time the kids are 12, ikkada kurrollaki undey independent thinking, mana india lo next to impossible. balupu s/o gelupu |

Anand_n:.the same problem the dean of IITM lamented with the onset of coaching schools taking most of IIT seats Samething with SAT scores - earlier 2400 used to be a rarity - now its common place among asians Has the standard of students increased or rote learning ?
it's human that people will game the system, if not today, maybe tomorrow. So, the system needs to change and adapt itself. exams are but a destination and are easy to be tweaked around. I am not that worried about it. notice how the format of JEE changed over the years; and ofcourse the coaching instis are catching up very fast and IITs need to stay a step ahead somehow. and they will figure it out. SAT may not have been tweaked but they touched GMAT this year - since the asians are gaming the exam. you will see chinese students with a GMAT of 760 who can barely write a proper english sentence coherently. just mind boggling. balupu s/o gelupu |

Bushu: yeah but isnt this in addition to the core system? a system where critical thinking is stressed upon more? this hasnt replaced the basic system, right?
True - not yet But it will is what i am saying...E.g. the GT program is meant for kids who are exceptionally gifted or talented - the testing is an IQ/cognitive test that identifies these kids..you are not supposed to prepare kids for this test..because it is meant to measure raw intelligence..and in the program to foster that creativity on all various fronts Once you start pumping kids into the program who have been coached to the testand made it in by rote - you get a selection of kids who are unidimensional thus diluting the whole program ..the same problem the dean of IITM lamented with the onset of coaching schools taking most of IIT seats Samething with SAT scores - earlier 2400 used to be a rarity - now its common place among asians Has the standard of students increased or rote learning ? Bushu:dont think so. the basic tenets of the system are all soundly in the culture. by rote is not encouraged anywhere in the system. I see asians adapting to this style rather than forcing it on schools here.

Do people see a change in the system from when we were growing up? People pay such crazy fees for their kids. do you think the system has evolved from rote learning to some critical analytical learning? I like the US style system a lot better than the indian style school education. balupu s/o gelupu |
