Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who had virtually messed up the power sector in the last two years, is said to be trying to pass the buck on to former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy for the present abnormal hike in power tariff. Kiran is learnt to have commented before his close cabinet colleagues that the power sector should not been in such a pathetic situation and financial troubles had YSR not gone in for free power to agriculture sector. Because of this scheme, the agriculture power consumption had gone up steeply, resulting in a huge gap between demand and supply. This has forced the government to go in for additional power purchase from neighbouring states and other private companies at a high cost and it caused a huge financial burden on the discoms and the government. "In order to reduce this burden, the discoms had no option but to raise the power tariff and make fuel surcharge adjustments in the consumers" bills," he reportedly argued. However, the chief minister has failed to explain why his government, in the last two, years could not take any steps to complete the power projects to build additional capacity. The government had completely neglected the power sector, while the chief minister was too busy to save his own power, say critics. |
