In terms of determining how much extra to charge, the easiest part to figure out is the extra 7.65% that you'll be paying for FICA. (Instead of paying 7.65% for FICA, like you do as an employee, you'll now be paying 15.3% for Self-Employment tax as an independent contractor. 2. Next thing to try and factor in is how much you'll have to pay for E&O insurance. 3. Business licenses. The costs of these can vary dramatically depending upon your location. After that, it's pretty much all positives to being an independent contractor: a) You'll be entitled to more deductions. And these deductions will be Schedule C deductions (saving you on SE tax) as compared to itemized deductions, like for an employee. b) Quarterly taxes. Some people think this is a disadvantage to being self-employed. Simply put, they're wrong. You actually get to keep you're money LONGER when you're paying taxes quarterly. Employees have withholdings from every single paycheck. As such, if you have an interest-bearing checking account (or a money market) into which your paychecks are deposited, you actually have MORE time to earn interest on your money while you're self employed. c) Freedom to set your own rates and pursue other clients as well, should you choose to. d) Ability to form an S Corp or a C Corp should your business ever grow to the point that it would create tax savings to be in either of those forms.
