Setting aside his agenda, he has a valid point. Imposing Telugu - will work only in state controlled schools... not in private schools. State controlled schools have mostly the weaker sections of the society. in tv5 Hyderabad: Citizens for Social Justice vice-chairman Kancha Ilaiah on Saturday heavily criticised the State Official Language Commission for taking up an anti-English campaign under the guise of the World Telugu Conference in Tirupati. Prof. Ilaiah threatened to launch state-wide agitations against imposing Telugu in all schools and against recent government orders to paint signboards only in Telugu. He said his protest against the anti-English policy would involve BCs, SCs, STs and minorities as it would be people from these sections who would be adversely affected if English was discouraged in schools and prominence given only to Telugu. âThese so-called Telugu lovers are conspiring to deny English education to students from BC, SC, ST and minorities. We are not against them holding World Telugu Conferences. But we will not tolerate if they try to impose Telugu in schools and colleges. The private schools will anyway avoid the compulsory Telugu rule as the government has no guts to initiate action against them. âStudents in government schools will be the soft target as they come from poorer sections. These students already lack English skills. If English is discouraged in these schools, how will they students compete with others and secure jobs?â Prof. Ilaiah questioned. He, in fact, demanded that all government schools be converted into English me-dium for the benefit of students from poorer sections. âA BC boy from Nalgonda studying in IIT-Bombay, recently secured a job in an MNC with a salary package of Rs 80 lakh per annum because he was perfect in English. Children from upper castes anyway study in English medium schools.
