Hyderabad: A massive fire broke out at the old airport at Begumpet late on Monday night. The airport is not used for commecial flight operations these days.

The fire was reported near the airport section used by aviation training academies and the Indian Air Force. This section lies along the road from Secunderabad to Bowenpally.

Reports said the fire brigade had deployed seven fire tenders, while the airport and defence personnel were also involved in the fire-fighting operations.

It is not clear how the fire started. Details were sketchy with the officials busy with fighting the fire. The presence of highly inflammable aviation fuel at the airport compounded matters.

According to latest reports, the fire was still blazing at 1.30 am. There were no known casualties, according to sources though ambulances have been kept on stand-by.

Fire brigade sources said that a hangar had been completely gutted and some aircraft were believed to have been burnt down.

Several training aircraft are parked at the spot, as are Indian Air Force aeroplanes and also the state government’s helicopters which is used by the Chief Minister.

With commercial and cargo aircraft operations having been shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad, the old airport at Begumpet is used for charters, special flights and for VIP aircraft operations.

The Begumpet airport, which is also called Rajiv Gandhi airport, is being used by the Indian Air Force and aviation schools to train their pilots.

The old airport also hosts the bi-annual Aero Expo of civilian aircraft. This is said to be the first major fire accident at the airport which has previously seen two aircraft crashes way back in the seventies
