It is easy and tempting to put bigger/faster CPU/GPU in HTPC, but no one wants noisy machine in living room. So,getting the optimal components is the key. |

Truelies:what should be the min configuration? i3/i5/i7 RAM etc..?
I turn it ON only when I need, so boot times and app. launch times are important. Even with HD content, there is no load on CPU as GPU does the hard work. I would suggest, i3 with 4 GB memory, 80 GB SSD and a good Video card. SSD helps boot times and makes app launches quick (all my content is on server though). I am running ATI Radeon 57xx card which is almost obsolete these days. Anything with HDMI out which bitstreams HD-audio is good enough. |

Here is the ideal setup. Have a NAS with built-in RAID support and hot swappable hard drives. Load up the NAS with couple of hard drives and configure it to "backup" all your computer on home network. Let the NAS "catalog" and stream media to client devices. Depending on the NAS you picked there may be transcoding involved while streaming that puts load on CPU and demands more memory. For each TV in the house, get a streaming client. Examples: WD TV Live, Iomenga Screenplay, Roku, Asus O!Play, Apple TV etc. With these clients there is a hit or miss to playback certain media types. If all your content is in one known format, you can fix on one kind of client device. And then, there is HTPC which is the client device connected to primary TV. With HTPC, you can be assured of playing any type of media along with online content. |

Feelgud:if media playing and dlna and storage file server is your agenda go for screen play devices go for iomega boxeee
Iomega Screenplay is a "client" that plays network media and outputs to TV via HDMI. This device itself is NAS. There are other offering from Iomega that are NAS products. |

Jalsa:Synology tho HD STREAMING TO TV cheyachu without any hiccups ani chadivaanu. Is it true? It has 1.2 Ghz processor with 256MB RAM. Network read/write speeds maximize cheyalantey em cheyali?
Depends on what type of player you are using to stream from NAS. I use WD Live Plus..it works fine for almost all formats. full HD 1080p has some hiccups. Network read/write speeds is different issue - depends on your wireless router, router settings, what type of devices connected (a/b/g/n), hard disk speed 7200 rpm etc.. |

Conquas:thanks bro... bought this DS212j ... I do have couple of questions though... synology is offering SHR (synology Hybrid raid).... do you think its good idea to go with that or ee type raid best?? i am thinking Raid 1.... planning to buy 2.. 3TB... and what is your opinion about western digital Red internal hdd?
you still not answered about features ??. the above para gave me impression that you are looking good data protection mith raid 1(mirror) but that reduces the storage space by half. for simple file server DROBO is best bet if you are looking for file server and dlna than synology is good. and if you want type of screenplay devices than that is bad choise .. Iomega scores here Hybrid raid is automated raid management .just a marketing term. it is useful for layman who dont have any knowledge about raid and disk management. if you can choose ur own raid no use of Hybrid Raid. www.TheLinuxDesk.com |
