Simba:

My point in this thread is, people spend fortunes on TV for Smart Apps which are inferior compared to a $100 box that has all these apps.

I agree, i am using wd tv live that I bought it for ~60 bucks

QNAP/Synology save lot of money on power and i can use it for backing up of all my systems (MAC and Windows);

I used to keep desktop on for two reasons (shutdown/startup is very slow, for streaming). Now I have QNap, so used this for streaming. Installed SSD in desktop, Around 20 seconds to startup, and less than 10 seconds to shutdown...

I don't have any issue. My home server is full-fledged OS. I could RDP and install any software. I usually run torrents on server and stream both in-home and over internet.

Now, I have the Windows Home Server machine running 24x7 which has the media. It runs Windows Media player (with codec pack), tversity, Plexserver simultaneously. All my clients HTPC, Bluray players, Roku, PlexClient can play content off the server with no issue.

@Vasista, I checked the manuals for couple of TV vendors. The only way to get 5.1 audio from SPDIF on the TV is with OTA tuner. For every other content (HDMI input, Smart Apps), SPDIF audio is downmixed to stereo.

Thanks for checking.. I used TV out long time back..

For your case, it is better to use some kind of linux based NAS server (QNAP or Synology). It will use way less power consumption, it can also download torrents directly.

Naa daggara over 1 TB of movies unnayi (downloaded over years). Ivi okkokkati okko format lo unnayi (avi, mpg, mkv etc). What I found is, it is not the streaming software that is the problem but client side player which doesn't like certain formats.

Now, I have the Windows Home Server machine running 24x7 which has the media. It runs Windows Media player (with codec pack), tversity, Plexserver simultaneously. All my clients HTPC, Bluray players, Roku, PlexClient can play content off the server with no issue.

Bottomline, just ignore smart apps on the TV and get a nice player if you have home theater setup.

Simba:

Naa question is simple. If you have a smart tv and are watching, say Hulu+ on TV (no source), the audio out from TV is 2-channel stereo. Where as if you play the same on Roku, you could get 5-channel audio to receiver. Why do people with HT setups compromise on audio, by using smart tv features.

Got you.. i think most TVs has Digital or SPDIF out..

Ila smart tv kone vallaku usual ga home theater setup undadha? How do they manage audio to receiver? HDMI audio-return channel??

Why not?

1) Usually all the source outputs go to receiver and receiver video output go to TV. (Best option)
2) If your receiver don't take HDMI; then you need two connections.. HDMI to TV, audio to receiver
3) TV lo audio out ni receiver ki connect cheyyochu..

All these can be managed with Harmony Remote (can configure on Computer in easy steps). I have setup activities like (Watch TV with Bose, Watch TV, Play Game, Play Home Videos, etc.,)

If i say "Watch TV", only tv and dish receiver will be on, with TV sound.

There are many software that catalogs your media, transcodes and streams to the clients. Depending on the type of your media (avi, mmg, mkv, mp4, mts) and the clients (TV, Bluray players, PC, PS3, Roku etc) you pick are choose the software. There is no one-size-fits-all solution.

Windows Media player in your laptop is good enough. All you need is to install codec pack that supports more media formats.

Other options: Tversity, Mezzmo, Serviio etc. Most of them have trial versions to test for your setup.

Plex/Xbmc are good lately if you need mac support.
