Nice, both of them are the most important developments that India requires, good if it is really 50% closer enough to the writing in the articles. |

Filmbuff:This space has seen a lot of activity - Medplus, Apollo Pharmacy, Guardian are the big ones that come to mind. Apart from this there are a few regional players in North and East India. I did not evaluate the sector in deep though. Medplus has even raised funding from a PE fund. I met the founder at an industry event and seemed a sensible chap. Instead of setting up on our own and then waiting for the brand to become big and then give out franchises etc, you might as well just buyout a few existing stores, rebrand them, give a good store experience, invest in CRM, loyalty cards etc That might be a faster way to grow than do on our own. Of course, if your friend has no experience in chemist shops, then he might want to first start off with one to test the waters. The main challenge i see with the space is that there is no differentiation between the stores. You get the same products at all the stores. Unlike organised retail versus mom and pop stores, where there are more SKUs in organised stores, richer in-store experience, good discounts etc, there is not much scope for that in chemist shops. Once Medplus/ Apollo started giving 5-10% discounts, most chemist shops started doing it. Unlike in UK or US, India shops have not evolved into non-pharma products in a big way or OTC drugs - like a CVC or Boots. I don't see that happening in India as our expectation from a chemist shop is different. Health and glow started with this ambition but is now only a standard beauty store with no drugs. So within the existing format of the stores and the industry life-cycle the competition will be stiff. That is my limited knowledge..
i will add in my 2 cents.. i have a childhood friend...(know him for 25+ years) .who I speak to regularly...they are into Medical stores for 2 generations...his father used to run the store...now he took over after his father passed away.. he is saying the biggest challenge is just to make money on medical stores is difficult because of competition..and discounts..he says..people go to a bar and spend 1000 rupees on drink and give tip on top of it, but want 10% discount on the medicine that they buy..which is eating away into their revenue.. so he himself is planning..to lease out bigger spease and setup franchise slots of leading brand..within the medical store.. |

FF Thanks for sharing. It is really good to know these kind of positive stories to remind ourselves that there are good things happening in India. Even though these are SMALL positive steps, having MANY of these kind of SMALL things will create a BIG POSITIVE impact on the whole society. I can think of another thing that Municial commissioners can do. They should AUCTION entire streets for keeping them CLEAN & GREEN in return for RIGHT to Advertise the company in that street. I saw this being implemented for TRAFFIC ISLANDS and ROAD Dividers and it should be extended to the ENTIRE Streets. |

The first one is a cover story in the Hindu Sunday magazine about a competition to clean garbage in Warangal. Shows what innovative administration and supportive public can do. http://www.thehindu.com/arts/magazine/trash-driving/article4 126243.ece The second one is a comparison about two villages - one in UP and the other in Chattisgarh. Raman Singh has bought about a remarkable transformation in the PDS system in Chattisgarh and this was highighted in the Economist this week. http://www.economist.com/news/asia/21566699-rural-india-ther e-hope-worst-policies-can-be-improved-tale-two-villages Both the articles are decent reads if one feels disheartened sometimes about progress in India. |
