It is a harvest thanksgiving festival - the first one is belived to have been celebrated by the spaniards in US but the more commonly known initial thanksgiving is about the pilgrims(then immigrants) celebrating their first harvest in the US by cooking a lavish meal and inviting natives... Thankgiving started as a custom among the Eurpoean settlers of paying respects to the native Indian population of letting then into the territory. Being the land of plentiful, continetal America provided great avenue for settlement. In this day, the settlers cooked meal for the natives and celebrated the sense of giving back. In current times, thanksgiving has meaning of feeling Thankful for what god has given us, forgiving forgetting, sense of sharing.
