The illicit Power of Delhi Establishment Posted on October 7, 2012 by krishnarjun108 i 4 Votes Delhi, the power centre of India with its power elite shows an imperious elitist smugness towards rest of India. It’s the seat of national government, naturally all things associated with power find place in Delhi. Who’s who of Politics, Administration, Law, Business, Media, Think tanks operate from Delhi. Anybody who wants to make it big across the country needs the stamp of approval from Delhi power elite before he could emerge in national consciousness. Such is the psychological hold of Delhi on mainstream Indian discourse. Some may contend my argument citing increased assertiveness of state capitals at least politically in recent times, but still delhi controls directly or indirectly. The best and also important example is media, any third rate English news channel located in delhi becomes part of “national” media and discourse. They get easy access to power elite from delhi and consider themselves at the top of information hierarchy and power in the country. Though a number of channels in regional languages mushroomed in the past decade, they operate within the boundaries of discourse set by “national” English media. The delhi “national” media created an information barrier in this country which others find it hard or lack resources, initiative to breach it. The “national” media is actively assisted by motivated “national” Think Tank groups from delhi connected to and liberally funded by governments, international foundations, corporations. The Think tank members are periodically decorated through lobbies with national and international awards for their services to national and international power elites. The nature of power in Delhi before was more of political, bureaucratic and diplomatic type, in last few decades its economic clout also increased, economic power now became inseparable part of political power with either politicians donning the hat of business or business magnates turning political. Businesses also finding it comfortable to operate close to the corridors of national government with increasing flexibility to twist and tweak policies in their favour. Delhi is the citadel of cosy political establishment for long. Politicians operating form Delhi are more likely to achieve “national” status compared to others. A long innings in the power corridors of delhi is a pre-requisite to be considered as part of delhi establishment. Most of the dynamics of delhi establishment is about networking with Godfathers /mothers using right contacts, with some good English speaking/writing talent and some support from God father/mother of delhi establishment one can easily emerge on “national” horizon. For lawyers, particularly Supreme Court variety, this delhi formula for power rise is like a jackpot. They usually are fully equipped wth argumentative talents from any side of the argument; all they have to manage is blessings from a Godfather/mother in delhi establishment. Once entering the charmed circle of delhi establishment, everyone is assured of a cushy assignment irrespective of their outward political party or group affiliation, only condition, they have to mind their own business without crossing over the undeclared etiquette, power norms of delhi establishment. They play the game of national and international accordingly to secure their interests and convenience. The interests of delhi establishment are beyond any external affiliations or distinctions of political parties, business groups, media and think tanks. It’s not that everyone is a close buddy of everybody else in delhi establishment, but they know how far they can stretch their fights. Like every rule has an exception, in last decade a leader from western India not only challenged this delhi establishment but also managed to emerge as a pan-indian icon much to the extreme discomfort of delhi establishment. His rise is something extraordinary in the political horizon of this country. Another grass root female leader from eastern state also vowed to take on delhi establishment recently after she was targeted incessantly by delhi minions, but she has just started and still has a long way to go. This incestuous delhi establishment has to be dismantled first before anything good can happen to this country. The leader from west will be facing a crucial electoral fight shortly in his state before he could march his political army into delhi. The delhi establishment cutting across all political parties including his, media, various interest groups is nervous but strongly determined to finish him in his state, equipped with all kinds of means for this fight. The future of this country is at stake in this December fight, it’s no ordinary election, victory of delhi establishment will maintain status quo for worse nightmare of this country, but Narendra Modi’s victory will be a major turning point for the future of this country.
