There is the story of Kalavati Bandurkar who got the national fame. Rahul Gandhi had narrated her success story in Parliament during a debate on July 21,2008. Kalavati is the mother of seven daughters and two boys in Jalka Village of Yavatmal district in Vidarbha.

Ever since Rahul visited her, she got generous support. Sulabh International, a Delhi based NGO donated Rs.30 lakh to Kalawati, however the help came with a rider that she can use only the interest. She is not allowed to touch the fixed deposit until her youngest son becomes adult and starts earning.

Bhandurkar never got a paisa’s compensation from government. The reason; the land they cultivated was not their own but leased from others. So when her husband Parsuram – hit by debt and crop failure – took his life, his death was recognized as a suicide, but not as a “farmer’s suicide.” The official logic, if there’s no land in his
name, he’s not a farmer. Her husband, Parsuram’s debt of over 50,000 led him even to mortgage her mangalsutra. The day he sold his cotton, he redeemed mangalsutra went out to the field and committed suicide.

Five of her daughters are married. She is able to earn about Rs.50 a day from gathering of woods. The buffalo’s milk fetches her about Rs.80 a day. She is annoyed at not being recognized as a farmer and thereby losing out in compensation. Kalavati is one survivor who asserts that she would like her children too, to go into agriculture.
This is rare in a countryside where people desperately seek government job. But in 2010, Kalawati’s son-in-law plagued by debts committed suicide, and in September 2011 her daughter set herself-ablaze. She used to bleed continuously after the child birth. As money was in short supply, Kalawati could not save her daughter.
