Diwali toll: 50 Children, 1 Minister injured; Rs.12 lakh losses Minister for infrastructure Ganta Srinivasa Rao, besides some 50 children, suffered burns and injuries during the Diwali revelry. Despite warnings that indiscriminate use of firecrackers would spell disaster, the City ended up with 50 children suffering serious burns. Some are in danger of losing their eyesight. Minister for infrastructure Ganta Srinivasa Rao was bursting crackers in front of his house in Vishakhapatnam when a firework he launched fell right on his foot. He developed a blister on his foot. Rao is under treatment and all his official programmes have been cancelled. Sarojini Devi (SD) government eye hospital at Mehdipatnam and LVP Eye Hospital in Jubilee Hills witnessed heart-rending scenes of wailing parents and suffering children. Scores of children are in intensive care units. A senior ophthalmologist at SD hospital said some 25 children were brought to the hospital last night, 10 were given primary treatment but the remainder were kept under observation as they had suffered eye injuries. The condition of two children is critical and they are undergoing immediate surgery. In LV Prasad Eye Hospital, 24 children have been put under intensive care. Four of them are in danger of losing their eyesight, hospital sources said. Most suffered damage in their eyes and hands. Emergency operations are to be conducted on four. No Signature |
