There is a obviously a space for the Republicans and their fiscal conservatism. One can't completely ignore that. The big call the Republicans need to take is whether they are going to be known for fiscal conservatism or social conservatism. The Bush regime took a budget surplus economy and led it to deficits. So much for the GoPs' fiscal strength. And their focus seems to be moving only to social issues like immigration, abortion, gun control etc. And that is a demographic that are not going to vote for them. So on the one hand they dropped the ball on their pet ideology of fiscal conservatism and lose voters there and they will not get votes on the second issue too from a majority of the voters. They also came to be known as a party that is anti-science and regressive. Take climate change - i still can't fathom why the GoP questions that, apart from big business lobbying. It is not either fiscal or social conservatism that can lead them to this backward thinking. Surely it is not a party platform to oppose this. They need to get out of the rut on many of these issues. Otherwise there is no hope. | ||
