Another pillar of river link proposition is that it will drought proof the country.
The trouble with this piece of argument is that it ignores the past experience. As a recent CAG report has shown, in reality, after 50 years of dam building, the drought prone areas in the country has gone up!
On the other hand, now we have before us hundreds of cases across the country that show that the real solution to drought problem is watershed development and local water systems.
For e.g. in Rajasthan, there were villages in drought prone areas that did not have water shortage or other drought related problems because they had done their rainwater harvesting over an extended period of time.
We do not need more of mega structures if we are really concerned about drought.
We do not need Bhagirathudu who spends Rs.60,000 Crs- we need every citizen to preserve the water.....that is more than enough. |

The govt has not done assessment of rainwater harvesting potential for a single basin or sub basin of the country.
Without realizing such potential, beginning from the gram panchayat level and going up in terms of larger area, would it make sense to go in for long distance transfer of water through river links?
Someone may ask, what is stopping anyone from rainwater harvesting?
Well, the state, the govt is.
The govt has told everyone that water is govt business and in fact when communities try and take up local projects, there have been many instances, including one in Alwar where the govt sent them show cause notices.
And storage tanks help in Rain Water harvesting - being used by the different kingdoms since the start of civilization....and these tanks have have fallen into disrepair barely 30 years after this idea called India became a reality...with a single government.....and politicians controlling the country |

Radha Nandan Jha former speaker and minister stated that the interlinking was initiated by Arthur Cotton in 1839 and revived by KL Rao in 1972.
The meeting in which KL Rao had put forward his proposal was attended by him and the scheme was questioned even then and was finally rejected. He wanted to link Cauvery, through a 2 640 km long canal,to the Ganga and the proposal was debated in the Parliament also and was dropped.
A similar fantasy was proposed by Dastur and was dropped again. |

A range of users, thus, depends on the tank either directly or indirectly. The stakeholders of tank therefore are not merely those owning land in its command area. Why cannot people segregate the garbage on not throw the garbage in drains?
The place where I live - segregation is mandatory and the wet waste is sold directly to the farmers who are more than happy to buy this - they travel from kolar and take this wet waste everyday.
The garbage contractors are the villains.
Why cannot the govt invest in waste management i.e. produce electricity from waste instead of investing Rs.60,000 Crores in useless Irrigation projects?
Siemens is ready to invest in this massive exercise in the cities of Chennai, Bangalore and hyderabad. Why is the Govt sitting on this decision.
Because the local MLA and Ward councilor own the garbage disposal contracts. |

Large water bodies hundreds of KMs away were connected by man made canals - and - along the way water diverted into small storage tanks - depending on the water flow.
HOW MANY OF THESE EXIST AND BEING USED EVEN TODAY?
Why did not successive governments revive and maintian these water systems instead of pumping money into massive Irrigation projects - benefiting the politicians - their relatives, the cadre and the liquor shop owners.

The amount of annual rainfall was more and cyclones were more severe in the 1980s and before that...and yet there was no massive flooding.
Even for a small cyclone - why is there annual flooding now.....2009, 2010, 2012....
every year - even for a mini cyclone or massive rain - it results in floods.
In 1979, there was a rain of 6 CMs in 1 hour...600 mm in 1 hour in Vizag. No floods - just a little water logging on the roads..... A little damage to the agri fields....
Now - even if there is 1 Cm rain(10 MMs) in 1 hour - there is so much of flooding....
How many water storage tanks that existed till the early -mid 80s are being used?
how many of the canal systems connecting the tanks to the large lakes are in use? |

In the name of Agri expansion, we have successfully killed the tanks and almost killed the lakes. The canal system - carrying water from the tanks to the lakes and vice versa is dead.
Instead we have spent Rs.60,000 Crs + in the name of Massive irrigation projects and got a big CHIPPA - of course the contractors(politicians and their relatives and party Cadre) made a lot of money...the labour enjoyed with their daily quota of liqu
