Just two cities whose names I think sound better in their popular old form, Madras and Calcutta. Yes, some parts of a movie can bring it up or make it fall. I definitely think that people in the 80s were more able to accept sad endings than people today. Personally, I couldn't really relate to Vennila Kabadi Kulu though I tried to watch that film too. | ||

Thanks - what is Madrascalcutta btw, is it the location of where you studied... The ending makes a lot of difference to movies. That is what happened to UP's case apart from the mellowed characterisation. take a case like Vennila Kabaddi Kuthu, if the hero lives at the end, the movie would have been totally flat. That is a trick that we miss in telugu. | ||

My count 10, beating my previous record of 9. Korean - A Bittersweet Life Japanese - Twilight Samurai, Battle Royale English - Clerks, Shame French - With a friend like Harry, On Guard, The Hairdresser's Husband Tamil - Uthiri Pookkal Bengali - Ashani Sanket My best movie of the weekend - Uthiri Pookkal. The movie was shown on DD nearly 20 years back and caught some 5-10 mins of it (and the ending) between some exam studies. I did not even know the name of the movie until recently. I searched long and hard for a DVD with English subtitles, in vain. Finally a net download got me the Holy Grail. UP is considered one of the greatest Tamil movies ever made and i concur completely. The characters are so perfectly etched that in the 70s, it was a watershed. Vijayan's character and the way he plays it is spot on, any excess would have made it a standard Rao gopal Rao character in Telugu cinema. Mahendran's brings a very deft hand to the screenplay. Vijayan is never shown even raising his voice. Mahendran cuts away from any scenes of violence through jump cuts (like slapping Sarath babu). The only fight is the fight at the Panchayat that is also shown through jump cuts, slow motions. Vijayan's sadism is more mental and psychological which is how it actually happens in real life. Real life villians don't go around with sickles. Which brings us to the oft-mentioned ending. The ending elevates the movie to a totally different level. Surely probably one of the finest endings ever in Indian cinema. Mahendran's ability to evoke sympathy for Vijayan at the end shows the innate humanity even in the most evil of people. Raja's BGM is stirring. It is a pity that classics like UP do not even have a decent digital print. I had to rely on some third rate print. The problem lies with our lack of a sense of movie history among the viewers and the producers. On Guard (le bossu) was my second best movie. A swashbuckling, swords and horses action movie with romance and comedy. I don't remember the last time i saw Hollywood make a movie like this. Clerks - absolutely lovely. In the same genre as a Linklater, total loser gang generally whiling away a day. Battle Royale - truly makes Hunger games look like a Disney movie. If quentin tarantino made lord of the flies, it would be like BR. Hairdresser's husband - short sweet, lovely French movie. With a friend like harry - a bit predictable, but decent French noir. Bittersweet life started off good, but ended up having too much unnecessary bloodshed and violence. The movie is like an Indian masala movie, till the second half becomes just a lot of mayhem. In fact you can close your eyes for the last 30 minutes, there is nothing much happening bar the shooting and you pretty much know how these end. Shame - brilliant acting by fassbender. Difficult watch though. A bit claustrophobic and unsettling. Twilight Samurai - another must watch about the last days of the Samurai, the start of the Meiji restoration and the accompanying tumult in the Samurai's lives. But all this is just a backdrop to a poor widowed Samurai, his struggles with bringing up his family, his love life. Hardly any fighting, mind you. Ashani Sanket - one of the few Ray's i had not seen. As usual lovely effort from Ray, but directorially not among his best ones. |
