Evanston police will spend the weekend canvassing the north part of the city for information as they continue a search for answers in the disappearance and death of a Northwestern University student. Harsha Maddula, 18, was last seen at a party in the 2000 block of Ridge Avenue where witnesses told authorities he was drinking alcohol, according to police. He left shortly after midnight Sept. 22, and his body was recovered Sept. 27 in the water at Wilmette Harbor — about 1 1/2 miles north of the party location. Using cell tower information and bloodhounds, police determined that he walked north to the harbor where his body was found, but little information has been discovered to explain his final actions. Evanston detectives and uniformed police officers will canvass the area of town between the party and Wilmette Harbor, talking to residents to solicit information on what happened to Maddula between 10:30 p.m. Sept. 21 and 1:30 a.m. Sept. 22, according to Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott. "We're hoping somebody may have seen him or thought they may have seen him and may be of assistance," Parrott said. On the night he disappeared, Maddula received a telephone call from a friend at 12:35 a.m., but told the caller he was back home in his dorm room. According to cell tower information, Maddula was already at Wilmette Harbor, Parrott said. The last signal Maddula’s phone sent to a cell tower was at 1:07 a.m. "He was obviously up in that area for a half an hour," Parrott said. "A half an hour — he’s got some time up there. The fact that he made a comment that he’s somewhere else than where he actually is, that’s part of what we’re trying to figure out." Police do not suspect foul play, he added. “This is either potentially an accident or something else that we just haven’t figured out yet,” Parrott said.
