Tammi .. lots of factors influence farmer suicides .. not just over production of a particular crop or a bad monsoon or a cyclone or flood! 1) There is no good seed available .. 2) There is a terrible shortage of pesticides .. (while the govt doesnt encourage organic farming as it should have been doing) 3) No sufficient electricity for farming .. 4) No sufficient water for farming .. 5) Not many agri dept officials who go to farms .. 6) No good roads from rural areas for agri-produce to quickly reach cities without getting spoiled 7) No good storage facilities like cold storages .. anni problems ki govt de responsibility as of now .. they have kept agriculture in their hands .. and whoever started this policy of agri-control should have got his mind checked for sanity .. Market planning. Take the example opf Shimla apples. All the produce used to come at one time and the prices had huge fluctuations. Now they plan their produce and maintain a steady supply. Not exactly correct Baba .. The land which we have not historically used for agriculture could be due to lack of irrigation or monsoons! Now new irrigation methods ensure water is reaching even some of the most water-scarce regions previously. Also technology (note - not pesticides) has made it possible to grow crops with very little water! And we have so much unexplored potential for agriculture in that sense! Pesticides only help in making the crop disease resistant. But that approach has led to de-fertilization of lands. And hence, the importance for organic farming. We need to understand that we can feed almost double this population without much difficulty! We have so much of unused agricultural land in the country and outside India as well.
