Am refreshing the facts again... The case on naroda patiya carnage was disposed off in 2007 saying the prosecution did not have sufficient evidence. then tehalka did a sting ops and some activists used this evidence and filed a case again. And in 2012 Sep the guilty - about 30 of them were sentenced. The Best bakery case was closed in mid 2000s since the witnesses turned hostile.So no case there. Struck down The godhra case - the guilty (all Muslims) were arrested in 2003 itself. And 9 of those arrested have been released in 2012 as the Court felt - they were arrested for no fault of thiers. | ||

Are you aware that recently in bangalore some arrests were made in this regard? periodically arrests are being made. And yet there are terrorists in select places of India. Some madrasas which preach hatred - You need political guts to act against these places. If you file a case in court - that a religious place is preaching hatred - What can the court do. At the most it can order an enquiry by the Police. The police go there - everything will look all right during the enquiry - and DONE. Why do you need sting op - Everyone knows the terrorist breeding grounds in pakistan - all details including the exact location etc - Have the Indian govts done anything about them - in what way will a sting ops on these training camps help. | ||

In case 1 - reg. The terroists - everyone knows the truth - the politicians do not have the balls to act.the courts do not have any jurdiction in this matter sadly. What will tehalka or someone acheive by showing this - You know, I know, the police constable knows, theMLA, MP etc - everyone knows about the terrorist activities - and yet the law enforcement - controlled by the politcians does not act. Sometimes a few arrests are made - GOOD. but this is not enough. but we need action here - not sting ops. In case 2 - Untill the sting ops were done, non one knew the truth. A different perspective...Something which is opposite to what we belive - and we are shocked - we go behind a wall and start shooting in a defensive mode. I have never even pointed fingers at anyone - any political party in thread - produced verbatim the contents of article which has not reached a large section of the population.I have not given any analysis of my own - because for all I know - I do not know a shit about this whole piece - except for what I read in different journals - some of which was contradictory. I was only interested in seeing the reaction of a set of people here - And I got what I wanted to see :-) A court judgement infact overruling an earlier judgement(made in 2007) was made purely based on the footage in the cameras and the evidence provided by this journalist. So if the journalist is wrong and has motives, then the court is also wrong. Where are we going - in our love for a particular political party??? Why do we need to tie everything to politics & Ideology? Why cannot we be flexible in our approach - and be broadminded? Some one is supporting murders in the name of religion!!! Some one else is actually working for an MNC client and yet is against globalization!!! Another person is opposing Water harvesting because he does not like CBN!!! | ||

Why should we do this? everyone knows that anti social activities are going on in certain places - Some of them are arrested - some get away - that sia law and order issue - the politicians do not have the balls to tackle this problem of terrorism - Why does it need a journalist to show the trusth - when everyone knows the truth. You need a good investigative journalist to unearth the truth - not to show what is already known. I read the entire thread and here is my piece of mind to Mr Dada garu... Educated, Rational and sensible people MUST take inputs from both ends and then take a JUDGEMENT CALL. It is good that you follow Tehelkha and are carried away with their investiagtive journalism. But you should also understand how much are these journalists try to bend facts to justify their ideology. My Uncle (Babai) worked with Tarun Tejpal (CEO of Tehelkha website during Manoj Prabhkar - Kapil Dev Match fixing controversy) and I know how much they twist the truth to create SENSATIONALISM. And I agree with Tilak garu which I want to ask.. We Indians (specially Congress) are out and out Pseduo Securlaisits. Make noise when Minorities are effected. No sound when Hindu are attacked in Kashmir, North East, Punjab.. What was the investiagtive journalism doing for the countless bomb attacks done in India ? CoalGate was a term coined in 2012 - very recently after the CAG report..... It's origin is the Illegal coal mining and the mafia and the allocations / Non allocations. And the article i 2008 talks about the mafia, illegal mining and the even mentions the same company (one of the biggest accused) - all this way back in 2008. Idhi printouts theesi we (I and a couple of people from this DB) in Jan 2009 itself had given it to a political party - to use it against Dasari Narayana rao.It was not used - that is a different issue - due to the way the media would twist and give coverage to people attacking that party. | ||

The frail frame of Dubey Mondal stands out from the crowd, trying to fit more coal into a thin white sack. He is paid Rs 600 for every tonne. This coal has been mined illegally from a rat hole, ironically at the bottom of the same mountain where ECL mines at the top. âI work for the mafia. I have no other way to feed my family,â says Mondal, before setting off on his bicycle to designated depots. The bigger consignment is moved at night in trucks. The official price of coal is around Rs 2,800 a tonne, but the mafia sells it for Rs 1,300: the primary buyers are sponge iron units that have mushroomed around the town. THE CHANGE in ECLâs mining policy may have made things worse. The company shifted towards open cast mining because it costs less, but this has, ironically, encouraged more illegal mining. Spread across the coalfields, vast, open mines look like festering, unwrapped wounds. Surface earth has been scraped to get coal, but the heaps of extracted rock, rubble and mud remain piled at the rim After ECL reaches the prescribed âstopping pointâ or after it isnât profitable to mine further, the mines are abandoned. The scraped material is not filled back in, a negligence that allows the mafia new ârat holesâ to mine illegally. If caught, Muskaan can end up in prison for months without trial, but a lonely constable in khaki from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), watching passively at the sidelines provides the much-needed assurance. When coal was nationalised in 1973, the government took over Raniganjâs assets, but not its liabilities. Mining protocol demands underground cavities be filled with sand, but dungeons from the British era remain unfilled. Coal India Limited (CIL) that owns the subsidiary Eastern Coalfields Limited, which, in turn, owns the mines in Raniganj, is aware but has ignored the crisis for long. Recently, CIL chairman Partha Bhatta - charyya said he will get global investment to resume work in 19 abandoned mines. The mafia laughed. The mines, for them, have never been abandoned. Mining continues, so does subsidence. Most recently, it happened barely 200 meters from the popular Anjana Cinema hall. Before that, an entire lake dried up, a few hundred meters behind Raniganjâs DAB school. An empty gallery somewhere sucked in the water. If the gallery had been packed with sand, the lake landform would not have been destroyed. The locals, meanwhile, remain trapped in the curious cycle of need and greed. They inherited a land enriched with some of the best A-grade coal available in India. With CIL taking over, they lost access. Agriculture is not a viable option because all the ground water has seeped into the hollow earth. With no other skills, most are driven to either work for the coal mafia, or steal whatever coal they can find. | ||

Writing about the Gujarat riots, Suzy Roy had this to say (Outlook, May 6,2002). A mob surrounded the house of ex-Congress MP Iqbal Ehsan Jaffri. His phone calls to the director-general of police, the police commissioner, the chief secretary, the additional chief secretary (home) were ignored. The mobile police vans around his house did not intervene. The mob broke into the house. They stripped his daughters and burnt them alive. Then they beheaded Jaffri and dismembered him. The description is graphic; the veracity of the incident taken almost for granted coming from a writer of Arundhati Roy's reputation. But, alas, that's where we make the mistake. Fame and honesty are not interlinked as the following paragraph clearly indicates. Jaffri was killed in the riots but his daughters were neither 'stripped' nor 'burnt alive.' T.A. Jafri, his son, in a front-page interview titled Nobody knew my father's house was the target (Asian Age, May 2, Delhi edition), says, "among my brothers and sisters, I am the only one living in India. And I am the eldest in the family. My sister and brother live in the US. I am 40 years old and I have been born and brought up in Ahmedabad. So if Ehsan Jaffri had only one daughter (singular) who was safe and sound in the US, where did Roy get her facts about not one, but daughters (plural) being stripped and burnt? Was it the fantasy of a writer's mind? Or was it willful deceit aimed at maligning her ideological adversaries? Arundhati Roy did apologise for her mistake in a letter published in Outlook May 27, 2002. Could this have been a genuine mistake, one is tempted to ask? But when such 'mistakes' occur periodically, the chances of them being accidental appear remote. They appear to be in fact calculated machinations aimed at achieving a specific goal as the following incident further proves. In the same article, Roy claims. "Last night a friend from Baroda called. Weeping. It took her fifteen minutes to tell me what the matter was. It wasn't very complicated. Only that Sayeeda, a friend of hers, had been caught by a mob. Only that her stomach had been ripped open and stuffed with burning rags. Only that after she died, someone carved 'OM' on her forehead." Disturbed by the thought of such a ghastly act, Balbir Punj (a BJP MP) had this matter investigated. In Outlook (Jul 08, 2002) he wrote. Shocked by this despicable 'incident,' I got in touch with the Gujarat Government. The police investigations revealed that no such case, involving someone called Sayeeda, had been reported either in urban or rural Baroda. Subsequently, the police sought Roy's help to identify the victim and seek access to witnesses who could lead them to those guilty of this crime. But the police got no cooperation. Instead, Roy, through her lawyer, replied that the police had no power to issue summons. Why is she hedging behind technical excuses? So when asked to prove her allegations, Arundhati Roy developed cold feet; definitely not the attitude of a crusader for truth. Despite the lies being exposed, Suzy Roy continues to be hosted as a crusader by our media. For such absolutely blatant and deliberate lies no journalist would have survived in any mature and honest media. Such liars can expect to grow in the Indian media. On TV Rajdeep and Barkha continued their blitzkrieg against Modi, while the likes of Vir Sanghvi called him a âmass murdererâ in print. I have read the judgement and the judge deserves accolodes for sentencing this criminal for life - till he dies. and this criminal has openly bragged about the incident - caught on camera - and based on this footage - the case was built was an activist called TEESTA SETALVAD. and the judgement was delivered about 3.5 years later i.e. about 2 weeks back. The judge said - the claim of the accused that they had impaled a foetus is not believable- but they had killed a 9 month pregnant woman (and obviously the baby inside)by cutting open her womb. and the arrested has clearly said - I HAVE DONE THIS - I FELT like RANAPRATAP after doing this. | ||

The Fateful Halt: Chain is Pulled Again, Sabarmati Halts Near Cabin A At 8 am, after the train had moved a short distance, it again came to a halt near Cabin A. The time is recorded by Assistant Station Master (ASM) Rajindersingh Meena, manning the cabin. Itâs this second halting that is the most contentious fact in the chain of events leading to the carnage. The police claim the two Muslim vendors had pulled the chain with an intention to burn the train. But the evidence that emerged during the trial suggested this second halt was caused by the bursting of hose pipes, not chain-pulling. Assistant train driver Mukesh Pachauri told the court that the heavy stone-pelting and ensuing carnage didnât allow him to investigate the reason for the drop in vacuum pressure which had resulted in the second halt. But driver Jadhav told the court that he was informed by the lobby assistant in the Carriage Department at the Godhra Station that two hose pipes had burst and were replaced by him before the train finally left for Ahmedabad. Ground Zero: The Fury of the Mob Intensifies Before the assistant driver could find out why the train had halted a second time, the mob combusted. It had chased the train to Cabin A. Driver Jadhav says he saw a 1,000-strong mob pelting stones but he couldnât see much more because he was separated from Cabin A by 8-10 coaches. The heavy stone-pelting had begun to break the window panes. Survivors told the court that at this stage the passengers had downed all the iron shutters and locked the doors to save themselves. The police had not yet reached. The two officials closest to Ground Zero were ASMMeena and his colleague AK Sharma, both manning Cabin A. Meena told the court that about 10 coaches had already passed beyond Cabin A when the driver blew the chainpulling whistle. He got down from his cabin to set the chain right. Thatâs when he saw a mob of about 200-500 people running towards the train from the back. They were pelting stones. When TEHELKAâs stung Meena in 2007, he had said that when he came down and asked the mob why they were chasing the train, a few of them had replied that one of their people had been abducted by the karsevaks on the train. Meena also said he heard some of them suggesting the coach be set on fire to drive people out of it so they could find the missing person. But he saw no sharp weapons or inflammable material with the mob. Tinderbox: The Packed S-6 Coach was a Death Trap By all accounts, coach S-6 was bursting at its seams. It was carrying over 200 passengers, at least three times its normal capacity. Its doors and windows were shut. Further, to stop the mob from forcing its way into the compartment, the passengers had blocked the doors with their luggage. Outside, unable to dissuade the mob, the frightened Meena ran back to his cabin. His colleague Sharma had already informed their seniors about the situation. Inside coach S-6, no one could quite make out what was happening as all the windows and doors were shut. This was more or less the case in every coach. During the trial, testimonies of passengers in other coaches established that the mob had pelted stones on the coaches S-2, S-5, S-4 and S-7 as well. Burning rags were also thrown at coaches S-4 and S-2. A witness testified that a burning rag had landed in coach S-4 which the passengers promptly threw out. Smoke And Fire: Eyewitness Accounts By S-6 Passengers Meena told the court that he first spotted smoke rising from coach S-6 at about 8:30 am. Passengers inside S-6 also first saw the smoke, then the fire. Many survivors told the court that after they spotted smoke in S-6, they opened the door on the northern side and started vacating the coach. | ||

The First Halt: Chain Is Pulled; Sabarmati Stops After the altercation, both Muslims and karsevaks started pelting stones at each other on the platform. Many passengers have corroborated this in their testimonies during the trial. The railway police personnel, some tea vendors and a railway officer stationed at the parcel office on that day also testified to this. After a scheduled stop of five minutes, the Sabarmati Express started its onward journey at 7.47 am. According to the train driver Rajendrarao Raghunathrao Jadhav, he got the signal to leave at about 7:45 am. âThe train had just started moving,â Jadhav told the court, âwhen the chain was pulled at about 7:47 am. The train stopped. My assistant driver and guard found that the chain had been pulled from four coaches. We informed the station master.â Plausibly, eyewitness accounts suggest it was the karsevaks who pulled the chain as some of their colleagues had got left behind. But the police say two Muslim vendors â Illyas Mullah and Anwar Kalandar â had pulled the chain from outside. Interestingly, the police do not claim that they were part of the Aman Guesthouse meetings or part of the conspiracy in any way. Then why would they pull the chain? The prosecution failed to answer this basic question. Importantly, both vendors retracted their statements before the trial began. On the contrary, train guard Satyanarayan Verma told the court that many passengers were left behind at the station. When the train started pulling out, he saw many passengers running to catch it. In this chaos, the chain-pulling was set right and the train began to move again. The time was now 7:55 am. | ||

Second Provocation: Karsevaks Try to Abduct a Muslim Girl from the Platform There was more than a tea-stall wrangle on the platform. Some karsevaks had allegedly tried to abduct a Muslim girl. Sophia Bano Shaikh, around 18, accompanied by mother and sister, was visiting relatives in Godhra and had come to the station to board a train for her hometown Vadodara. Sophia testified before the court that she and her family were standing on platform No. 1 when the Sabarmati pulled in. Some men with saffron strips on their head got off for tea and snacks. They were shouting Jai Shri Ram. Some of them were beating a Muslim man with a stick and shouting âKill Musalmansâ. Frightened, Sophia and her family started moving away when one of the men grabbed her from behind, clamped her mouth and tried dragging her away. Her mother shouted loudly for help; the man let go. Sophia says she and her family stood in the booking clerkâs office for a while then gave up the idea of going to Vadodara, took a rickshaw and went back to her auntâs house. According to Sophia, the karsevaks also tried to abduct another burqa-clad woman on the platform. However, the police have failed to identify the woman or record her statement till date. Though the police recorded Sophia and her familyâs statement on 28 March 2002 â a month after the Godhra incident â they neither mentioned the episode in the official narration of events nor included Sophiaâs statement in the first chargesheet filed on 22 May 2002. These statements were only made part of the first supplementary chargesheet filed six months later. It was this aborted abduction of Sophia that aggravated the situation. A rumour went through the station that karsevaks had abducted many Muslim girls. A mob gathered. Though Sophia had taken refuge in the booking clerkâs office, the rumour spread that the karsevaks had successfully abducted her and other girls in coach S-6. During the trial, Purshotbhai Govardhanbhai Patel, a coach S-6 karsevak, told the court that the mob had been shouting slogans for the women to be released from the coach. | ||

Given the persistent desire to turn away from the truth, therefore, it is necessary to revisit the events on 27 February 2002, the suspect police investigation that followed and the untenable case that emerged, in greater detail. This might help readers draw their own conclusions. The Arrival: Sabarmati Express Enters Godhra Station 7:43 am. 27 February 2002. The Sabarmati Express, carrying karsevaks returning from Ayodhya, arrives at platform No. 1 The train is five hours late. Scheduled arrival was 2:55 am. First Provocation: Karsevaks Clash with Muslim Vendors During the trial, several eyewitnesses told the court that there was a fight between karsevaks and Muslim tea vendors on the platform. Veer Chedi Pal, a survivor of the coach S- 6 inferno, told the court: âA few karsevaks beat up a Muslim vendor who had entered the coach to sell tea. Then they threw him out of the compartment.â Another survivor Govindsinh Ratnasinh Panda, 54, an army man travelling from Lucknow to Ahmedabad, told the court: âI had a reservation for berth 9 in coach S-6, but a Bajrang Dal activist asked me to shift to berth 3. There were about 250 people in the coach. Most passengers were sitting unreserved and were members of the Bajrang Dal. At every station, they would get down and shout Jai Shri Ram. On 27 February 2002, between 7:30 am and 7:45 am, when the train reached Godhra, the karsevaks got down and raised slogans. I got up. Ten or 12 people from my coach had alighted. I felt Bajrang Dal members had also alighted from other coaches and were shouting slogans. There was loud noise on the platform. After three or four minutes, a few passengers came running inside the coach, closed the door and said a quarrel had taken place on the platform and stones were being pelted. They told everybody to shut the windows and doors.â | ||

Not only were they asked to put up false testimonies, the police then deliberately failed to produce their call data â something that could have easily nailed their exact location at the time of the incident. Two of these â Murli Mulchandani and Kakul Pathak â were caught on camera telling the TEHELKA reporter that both of them were actually sleeping at home when the incident occurred. Shockingly, they said not only them but the other seven BJP âeyewitnessesâ had also not been present at Godhra station (see boxes on pages 36 and 40). Pathak also confessed that though all nine were from the BJP, the police had passed them off as VHP members to justify their presence at the railway station. (The call for the Ayodhya karseva had been given by the VHP). TEHELKA had also laid out in great detail the pre-existing political and business rivalries that had guided the testimonies of these nine BJP men. These nine witnesses were a critical link in the prosecutionâs theory. Forty-one Muslims had stayed behind bars for the last nine years as previous judges had denied bail based on these testimonies. By calling them unreliable now, Judge Patel has validated both TEHELKAâs findings and the assertions of the Muslim accused that the Gujarat police had manufactured evidence and tutored witnesses. | ||

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE LIES OF GODHRA The prosecutionâs conspiracy theory against Godhra Muslims rested primarily on five sets of witnesses 1. Nine BJPmen who claimed to be eyewitnesses to the carnage These men accused 41 Muslims who spent nine years in jail. A TEHELKA sting caught two of these BJP men admitting on camera they were actually at home that day and the police fabricated their statements. They went along to âserve the cause of Hindutvaâ. The judge has now discarded all nine testimonies 2. Ajay Baria, a Hindu vendor, forced into the plot; saw it all Judge Patel has relied hugely on Bariaâs account. But why would Muslim conspirators pick a Hindu man at the last minute to help load the petrol and burn the train? TEHELKA tried to track him but failed. His mother said he had been coerced into becoming a police witness and lived under constant police surveillance. 3. Two petrol pump attendants who claim they sold 140 litres of fuel to some Muslims on 26 Feb Ranjitsinh and Pratapsinh Patel had first told the police that they had not sold any loose petrol that crucial night. In a shocking turnaround, six months later, they changed their version. However, TEHELKA caught Ranjitsinh admitting on camera that he and Pratap had been bribed Rs. 50,000 by police officer Noel Parmar to do that. He also tutored them to identify particular Muslims in court as being the buyers 4. Jabir Bahera, a petty criminal, who first named Maulvi Umarji as a mastermind Bahera claimed it was Umarji who picked coach S-6 as the target, but also said Umarji was not at any conspiracy meetings. He later retracted everything 5. Sikandar Siddique, another petty criminal, said he had pulled the chain the second time Siddique is an obvious unreliable witness. Besides Umarji, he had said Maulvi Punjabi had incited the mob. But Punjabi was not even in the country that day | ||

Next day, I was in Godhra, sitting before Kakul Pathak, a BJP man and an eyewitness to the Sabarmati Express fire. He referred me to Haresh Bhatt, former Bajrang Dal president, now a BJP MLA from Godhra. Bhatt was an extempore speaker, a man who preferred being heard to having a discussion. For a journalist, such men, particularly if they have things to reveal, are a blessing. After 45 minutes of tiring discourse on Hindutva, I edged a question in. âWeâ (meaning the Hindus; Bhatt was convinced I was an adherent of the militant religiosity he had preached all his life) ânever keep arms. How then could we manage to kill so many Muslims in 2002?â âIf I tell, do you promise it wonât be in your book?â (I had said I was writing a book to propagate the VHPâs brand of Hindutva.) âI made bombs, rocket launchers, swords, and distributed them across Gujarat. Firearms and swords were smuggled in from other states as well. Itâs the first time Iâm telling anyone this outside the party circle,â he said. For a moment, I was numbed with fear. That was June 1, 2007. Over the next few months, I would meet many who had been charged with rioting and killing and many who had worked behind the scenes. Along the way, I negotiated dead ends, spells of despair, moments of sheer terror. I was travelling once with Bhatt in his car from Ahmedabad to Godhra. Mid-way, he received a phone call. After disconnecting it, he turned to me and said he had just been informed that a journalist from Delhi was carrying out a sting operation on the Sabarmati Express incident and that he had been told to be careful. Oh, really, I said, with a straight face. A FEW MINUTES later, Bhattâs driver steered the car off the main road and turned into a narrow, deserted, kutcha road. As the car stopped outside a desolate, one-storey house, another car pulled up and two men got out. Bhatt and these men went into the house and told me to wait. I had two spy-cams on me and all it needed to blow my cover was a body frisk. I prepared myself for the worst. Twenty minutes later, Bhatt returned and we set out for Godhra again. The two men went off in a different direction. Bhatt told me heâd had been doing business with them. On another occasion, Bharat Bhatt, a Sabarkantha public prosecutor, became suspicious about my identity. Having told me how heâd threatened and bought off Muslim witnesses, Bhatt called me as soon as Iâd taken his leave and said he had serious doubts I was an RSS man. Within a few minutes, another VHP man Iâd stung a few days earlier called and asked for my location. However, I survived these close shaves and kept sailing. Whenever the tension became too much, Iâd make a quick trip to Mumbai, to my wife and daughter, my home, my cocoon. For six months, I remained a voyager between two worlds â my world, where I was Ashish Khetan, a journalist with a host of Muslim and Christian friends. And then there was the other world, where I was Piyush Aggarwal, a member of the âParivarâ, a Hindu zealot, a religious fanatic, with only murderers and rapists for friends. | ||

JAINâS MUSLIM phobia did not make a story for me. A day passed before I decided to meet Dhimant Bhatt who, besides being a BJP man, was the MSU chief accountant. At 11:30am on May 19, I walked into Bhattâs second floor office in an administrative block on the MSU campus. Struggling between perusing files and answering a near-incessant string of phone calls, he was most hospitable, offering me water, then tea, then showing me the way to the toilet (where I switched on the two spy cams I was wearing). Fifteen minutes into the conversation, after Bhatt was convinced I was as staunch a Hindu as he was (love for Hinduism being displayed on both sides by heaping abuse on Muslims), he uttered a few lines which would not only redefine my story but also, I believe, the way the nation sees the Gujarat riots. âI was involved in burning down the houses of Professor Bandukwala and the bureaucrat, Peerzada⦠Disguised as a peacekeeper, I supplied weapons during the riots⦠We should put the Sanghâs lathis aside and take up AK-56s instead.â My head began to reel. Bhatt might be an accountant by day, but his true vocation lay in tormenting religious minorities. Destroying paintings was, for him, a small skirmish. The real battle had been fought and won five years ago, in 2002. And five years ago was where the real story lay, I told Harinder Baweja, known also as Shammy, my immediate boss. Both Tarun and Shammy agreed, and told me to go after the story. Resources and time were no constraint, said Tarun. âLet your story be the last word on the Gujarat riots,â Shammy said. And thus began a sixmonth journey. A journey that would take me back in time, looking to rewrite the history of the year 2002. A journey in which my only companions would be fear and hope â hope of finding the truth and fear of being consumed by it; hope of hunting down the murderers and fear of being hunted myself. Hope, which is so rare for so many in Gujarat. Fear, a permanent shadow, almost an extension of your being, always lurking at your shoulder. | ||

I hastily made a few calls to rights activists protesting the events at MSU; I also got in touch with a contact in Mumbai who had friends in Gujarat. I told him to put me in touch with people in the BJPâs Vadodara unit without telling them I was a journalist. âTell them Iâm Piyush Aggarwal, a research scholar from Delhi University, writing a thesis on Hindutva in Gujarat.â He said heâd give me a few references in the morning. The next day, I called him at 10am. He did not respond. I called several times, to no avail. My Mumbai contact finally answered my call. He gave an excuse for not having been available earlier. I was more interested in getting the names and numbers of local BJP men. He obliged with a few. âI hope youâve told them Iâm a research scholar, not a journalist,â I said. My contact assured me this was exactly what heâd done. I called up Mr A. He was a bit probing, asking questions about the nature and purpose of my research. He didnât sound like Iâd convinced him, but he put me in touch with Mr B., who in turn put me in touch with one Dhimant Bhatt who, I was told, was personal assistant to the Vadodara BJP MP and would introduce me to the right people. From the news, I already had the name of Neeraj Jain, the BJP office bearer who led the ruckus at MSU. I called up Bhatt and told him I wanted to meet Neerajbhai Jain (bhai is an essential suffix to most names in Gujarat). At the appointed time, I walked into the high-ceilinged reception room of the Vadodara BJP party office. Half an hour later, Jain walked in, a short man in his late 30s with a newly-acquired paunch. He was fixated with Muslims, whom he evidently considered the root of all evil. But his hatred for Muslims did not seem to flow naturally â it seemed more a matter of political expediency, of routine. From ordinary Bajrang Dal worker to Vadodara BJP general secretary, Jain had travelled a long enough path to know that Hate Muslims was his ticket to political success. Vandalising paintings in the name of Hinduism had only enhanced his reputation. | ||

Now, as then, the biggest question was where to start? And, now as then, I knew nobody, not a soul in this alien land. A magic, perhaps divine intervention had seen me through my 2004 visit â within a fortnight of my arrival, Iâd been sitting right before Zaheeraâs chief tormentor, BJP MLA Madhu Srivastava, the local ganglord, in his own front garden, he on a swing, I on a shabby plastic chair, with a spycam on my lap. Then, as now, my brief was simple. Nothing was adding up in the Zaheera episode, Tarun had said. I was to join together the scattered pieces and complete the picture. And when completed, it added up to a nice round figure: Rs 18 lakh. The sum Srivastava had paid Zaheera to buy her silence. But that was then. Miracles donât happen everyday, I told myself.
