i think it is mostly sociological. most reptiles have gained a taboo status in most cultures, mainly because they are silent, and seem to encroach territories stealthily. this stealth often becomes a shocking factor, when you realize they are around. physically, textures of their skin is also repulsive to many. Scoliodentosaurophobia is the specific phobia term for fear of lizards while Herpetophobia refers to fear of reptiles in general. Like most phobias, fear of lizards usually starts with a "traumatizing" experience that a person had with these creatures. Although traumatizing here doesn't mean something that hurt or caused extreme pain or shock. Someone said that he developed the phobia when, as a child, he saw a detached lizard's tail still moving as if it has a life of its own. It was like the stuff of horror stories and he never got over it. Another recalled an incident when a lizard fell on her neck when she was a teenager. Its cold, soft, gooey skin startled her and sent shivers all over her body. Now, just looking at lizards reminds her of that feeling and she couldn't stand it. In my case, I really can't pinpoint a particular triggering event. As a child, I knew I was partly afraid of lizards. But I wasn't deathly terrified of them. So it could be that one of my playmates caught one and held it close to me, which intensified my fear of lizards. That would be a good explanation why I can be in the same room with lizards but I go nuts, and fly out of the room screaming, when someone holds it in his hand.
