Mysmartprice.com is great. They are a product comparison site and throw up the best price across sites. I always go for the lowest price. Oka site 2 days theesukovacchu, unko site 7 days theesukovacchu. 3-4 days mundu kosam ekkuva dabbulu pettatam waste anipisthadi, nakaithe. I have enough to read anyway. Vaaram vaaram, naa Economist chadavatinike time saripodu.

I have read quite a few of Dalyrymples books - City of Djinns, From the Holy Mountain, In Xanadu, White Mughals etc. I really really love City of Djinns though From the Holy Mountain is his most learned book. Many people may not like his thoughts and beliefs around syncretism and he might come across as an Islamist apologist, but i gladly pass that and look at his erudition and language.

He said that the Nizams preserved the mixed heritage and that Hyderabad remained 'the last great centre of Indo-Islamic culture and the flagship of Deccani civilisation'. "Urdu became a literary language first in the Deccan and later in North India," he said. Darlymple felt that there was a serious lack of scholarship on the historiography of the Deccan and said, "The Deccan remains a major lacuna. For every book written on the Deccan sultanates, there are one hundred on the Mughals, for every book on Hyderabad, there is a shelf on Lucknow."

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/Naipauls-m usings-on-Vijayanagar-misleading/articleshow/16358501.cms

HYDERABAD: Nobel laureate V S Naipaul's view that Vijayanagar kingdom was a 'Hindu bulwark' against the invasion and expansion of the Muslim sultans in the Deccan was contradicted by celebrated historian and writer William Darlymple on Tuesday. Quoting a host of scholars such as Philip B Wagoner and Richard Eaton, he said that Vijayanagar and the sultanates of the Deccan were inspired and also benefited from each other's worldview.

Presenting the inaugural lecture on 'The Syncretic Civilisation of the Deccan' at the H K Sherwani Centre for Deccan Studies in Maulana Azad National Urdu University (Manuu), Dalrymple said, "Naipaul's musings are written eloquently. The problem is that these ideas rest on a whole set of assumptions which recent scholarship has done much to undermine."

He noted that American scholar Wagoner's essay was an important landmark in the revisionism of history. "The essay entitled 'A Sultan Among Hindu Kings', a reference to the title which kings of Vijayanagar conferred upon themselves, pointed out the degree to which the elite culture was Islamicised by the sixteenth century. Its civilisation was deeply transformed through nearly two centuries of intense interaction with the Islamic world," he said. Contrary to Naipaul's accounts, he said Vijayanagar was 'far from being the final, stagnant, backward-looking bastion of Hindu resistance' but had developed by adopting military and administrative methods of Muslim sultanates such as horse armour, horseshoes and new types of saddles which enabled the kingdom to 'field an army of fearsome horse archers' which could repel the most powerful Delhi sultanate forces. He said that the Vijayanagar kingdom which had allied itself with Muslim armies, sacked the sultanate of Ahmednagar. Vijayanagar was only a victim of shifting alliances of Deccani power politics and not of a campaign of Muslims states to wipe out Hinduism, he said.

He noted that like Vijayanagar had absorbed Islamic influences, the Muslim state of Bijapur too had absorbed Hindu influences. "Ibrahim Adil Shah (ruler of Bijapur) gave up wearing jewels and adopted the rudraksh of the Hindu holy man. In his songs he used highly Sanskritised language to shower equal praise upon Saraswati, Prophet Muhammad and the Sufi saint Gesudaraz," he said. He noted that Shah's tomb was more Hindu in spirit and added that 'girls as voluptuous as the nudes of South India stone sculpture' can be found in Bijapuri art which clearly reflects a syncretic spirit.

Taking into account James Achilles Kirkpatrick's and Iranian traveler Abdul Latif Shustari's observations of the syncretic nature of the Nizam's dominions, Dalrymple recounted how Kirkpatrick mentioned in a letter that the Hindus and Muslims looked alike and that about five lakh people including Muslims, Hindus, Shivites, Vaishnavites, Brahmins, Marwadis, Arabs and even English went to the Urs at the shrine of Maula Ali. He said that Muharram 'celebrated' then had things in common with Hindu festivals like the Kumbh Mela with standards and chariots modelled on Hindu temples.
