ippudu gurtocchindhi. when I applied for Indian visa (in year 2008), I submitted my Indian passport along with US passport. They cancelled my indian pp and sent it to me, along with u.s passport with visa. At that time, no such thing as surrender certificate. | ||

1) Apply for US Passport on the same day at USCIS center or at the local post office (around 10 days, or 2 days if expedited) TT: usualy, oath ceremony takes place in the big hall, high school auditorium. There, u.s postal folks will be present. You can apply u.s passport then and there itself 2) renunciation of indian citizenship and obtaining surrender certificate (two weeks?) TT: I THINK, you dont need to do this, to get Indian visa or OCI or PIO card, but i am not sure 3) Then apply for Indian visa or PIO card (2 weeks for visa, or 4-5 weeks for PIO card?) on the day of oath, you can apply u.s passport (you can expedite the process as well). once you get the u.s Passport, send that u.s pp to Indian consulate to get either indian visa or OCI card. | ||

well i sat on my ass ignoring to apply the passport for almost 1.5 years ideally the moment you get citizenship apply for US passport and immediately send it to indian embassy for visa (they will multiple-entry stuff for long time).. my wife applied for citizenship so when we she got her us cit.. we did this immediately | ||

I went to India in similar situation 4 years back (I lot of it will depend on luck and timing as well) US Passport in washington will give passport (if you go early in morning submit your application) they will give US passport by lunch/after-lunch time Call Indian embassy tell them the emergency beforehand. I went to Indian embassy met the consular officer he listned to emergency initialled the form - asked me to go to travisa pay money and they did some paperwork, gave me passport back to me and asked me to go back to indian embassy with filled form and us passport.. i went to the counter and submitted the form.. begged the annoying lady to give me passport was i had to catch the flight in the evening so i flew in early morning to washington, went to us passport office, got the passport then went to consulate, travisa, then back to consulate, then to airport and flew to India.. I am not recollecting the details of Indian visa running around.. but my wife was calling them on phone and doing the requesting | ||

mama, i posted the question in immigration board.. here is the answer: "After taking the US Citizenship you can travel up to 90 days with your indian passport to india. After that if you use indian passport for travel they will charge a fine. Not sure what is the amount you can check on the indian consulate website. In this case you can travel up to 90 days on your indian passport. Getting the OCI can take up to 90 days from the date of approval. US allows dual citizenship, but India does not. Arnold has dual citizenship, He ran for Austrian president and lost. Then came to usa and won as governor in california. (ofcourse, for governor, you dont need to be born citizen) | ||

Both India and US do not allow dual citizenship, you have to give up one. US passport with OCI is the popular choice. Apply for a US passport, the day you get your citizenship and hopefully we don't have an emergency in those few weeks. | ||

Many countries have dual citizenships, that is why when she gets the u.s citizenship, it is not mandatory for her to surrender indian citizenship. However, Indians should send the Indian passport to Indian consulates, who will stamp CANCELLED on all pages and cut 2 corners in the edge, to make it invalid. | ||

thanks guys for all the suggestions... I am not sure..how she has Indian passport even after getting US passport... The Indian embassy gives emergency visas on Saturday between 11 and 1. She missed that window..I think she came to know little later than that.. Sad part enti ante..her mother is also here...mother no alone pampinchadam ishtam leka also she wanted to go..Not sure what they decided... | ||
