As always, great post F-man - but, the gods of mount kailash what?  Anyways, I too will miss laxman - the greatest of test batsman modern Indian cricket produced. A true cricketer who strived for team wins rather than personal records. But this is not the way a cricketer of such caliber should retire. Not a freaking way - Shame on you BCCI and shame on srikanth, just realize that laxman is far greater cricker than you ever was. Very very sad laxman. I expected him to retire after scoring 10,000 runs with above 50 test match average not with 45 average. for some reason he lost the motivation to score runs, very disppointed after reading his retirement news. He should have atleast played the new zealand tour's 2 test matches, with good form you can do miracles at any age. after kumble , VVS contributed for most test wins. Totally gutted with this news! There have been rumours doing the round the last few days and I was hoping against hope! Last time I felt so sick, from a sports point of view was when Sampras retired! [fortunately federer showed up just in time to change my perspective]. I doubt anyone can come close to replacing laxman! Those flicks, pulls, inside out cover drives, back-foot punches provide an intoxicating cocktail that would give any cricket lover the greatest pleasure one can have without you or someone else touching you! If you are trying to describe laxman's cricket using numbers or records, you have absolutely missed the moon for those dark, disgusting craters! Laxman's batting was about a superior form of entertainment. A form of entertainment ordained by the Gods to let a common man turn himself into a snob and revel in entertainment much more exalted than any opera/ballet could provide. Laxman combined bucket-loads of magic with truck-loads of artistry and a generous dose of genius! The results were often masterpieces that would make even the Gods of mount olympus/kailash. my personal favourite among all of laxman's mind-blowing knocks is the 167 he scored at the 2000 new year match in sydney. He absolutely murdered mcgrath, lee, warne and co. No brutal and gory stabbings, obviously. Laxman does not do brutal and gory. No mam! he does not! This was murder from a million of the finest cuts from the most razor sharp swords you could ever imagine a warrior wielding! The only other knocks I would mention in this league would be SRT's 114 and 169 in capetown in 96 and lara's 182 in adelaide 2000 and pietersen's 149 a few weeks back. Those knocks are totally burnt into my cranium! Mark Antony in Shakspeare's Julius Caesar, says this about Caesar " Here was a Caesar, when come such another!" and the crowd respond to it "never! never!". You could say the same for Laxman! So long and thanks for all the fish, Laxman! God bless ya! Been a privilege to be born in the era to watch and appreciate your magnum opuses! What the executioner did after he was done with his job. hard to imagine a fast delivery on or outside offstump to be lazily flicked to mid-wicket or square-leg with consistency.. It just changes the fielding strategy of the opposing captain.. when he wants his bowlers to stick to a certain line for a planned strategy/field-setting.. Whoever coined the term Very Very Special had seen it happen and voiced their emotions when they made this statement.. I remember staying up nights watching the kolkata test where he forged that brilliant and epic partnership with another great (Dravid).. man went in when we were in dire straits in first innings.. came back at the top.. pulled a magnificent 180+ and resoundingly thumped mighty aussies.. VVS - thank you sir.. hats off to your talent and grit.. you are one of the few who had the gift of both and used it well. your batting was so sublime it was hard to notice that you dont run for your score but hit mostly in boundaries Its hard not to empathize with the opposition bowlers when this special player languidly handles whatever they dish out | ||

Best second innings player we had. Would rate him little ahead of Rahul in 2nd innings for his composure. Eppudu lax tension lo soodaledu unlike Sachin and Sourav. Lax should have retired a little while ago, but better now than later. He will not be listed among the statistical giants, but in his own class towers among many. If cricketing skills were measured on maneuvering the ball on either side of the wicket, Laxman would leave all his predecessors to dust. When and when not to retire is a player's pre-rogative and VVS Laxam is actually readying for his swan song.....and telling him to go out a this stage will obviously hurt him... -- retire or play T20...T10....doesnt matter when representing India... based on aus and england tour....he is ready to be axed..... glorious flashback doesnt count for nothing.....except from some 'GODS'.... from what i read....he eying aus and england series next years.....now that is too much to ask......team is not here to provide him oppurtunities to redeem.... anyways Sad that it has to be this way...... satisfied ga retire avvatam veru....ila veru.... still....he will be remembered as a gentleman.....and a great batsman....... That is the problem with Indian cricket if you are not from Delhi or Mumbai... or the Hindi heartland. VVS, Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid are all great players who never got their due. Same is the case in the yester-years. Prasanna, S.Venkatraghavan, GR Vishawanath etc never got the respect they deserved... | ||

Laxxi never got the right treatment from BCCI...starting lo opener ga toosaru...tarvatah 1st down lo bagane perform chesina pushed down to 4th down...then 5th down and had to play with the tail....he always had an axe on his head everytime he went out to bat...sad he was treated like shit...now even the retirement is forced on him...2 bad series overseas and every TDH commentator becomes a hero criticising laxxi....everyone wants oldies to retire but nobody has the guts to ask sachin for retirement...what is sachin achieving by playing some more years.... from what i read...he was upset with something..... but....still one of the best 'TEST' batsman in the world.....not just India..... BCCI konchem manage chesi....hundaga retirement ivvalsindhi....... but players alos have to understand.....16 yrs is long and they should cherish that chance of representing the country that long....no where else a batsman gets this longeivity only in India....
