Devudu Chesina Manushulu

Here, let me save you the trouble of reading the entire review to find out my opinion. I loved the movie. If that makes you think I am a nut job, thank you very much for reading these two lines. Have a nice day.

If you are still here and you are wondering what I am up to, let me introduce you to the setting of the scene. That guy in the Far East corner of the office staring intently at his computer screen will call my name in a minute and I would walk through the sliding doors of the office into the plush consultation room of Mr Pressman.

"Mr. Vedam?" I hear my name.

I nod and walk in. A pleasant looking gentleman of about fifty greets me warmly and accompanies me to my seat.

"So what is bothering you?" He says.

I clear my throat; take a deep breath and let it all out.

"So that is what is bothering me. Every living being on the planet hated that movie. In fact they said it was to Puri Jagannath what Aag was to Ram Gopal Varma. But I loved the movie. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I liked the message in the movie and I found the entertainment factor awesome. But to find that I am the only person in the world to experience that side of the coin is really bothering me. Either I am a nut job or everyone else is - effectively making me a nut job anyway because either way, I am not in conformance with what the world thinks is the right way of thinking."

"Did you really like the movie or you just wanted to be different?"

"You know what? That thought has crossed my mind umpteen times. Perhaps I am trying to show off how different I am. But deep down I know that is not true. I truly liked that movie. In fact when I was coming out from the movie hall, the only thought swirling in my mind was - Oh no! If I had not booked the tickets in advance, I wouldn't have seen this movie after reading all those reviews and I would have missed a gem."

"Go on"

"I mean, all the reviews said that the heroine was bad. I found her incredibly attractive in this movie and for a change, she had a meaty role and a skinny body. She even acted well. They said Ravi Teja was becoming monotonous. I found him neither monotonous nor run of the mill in this movie. He was energetic of course like he has always been but he hasn't tested my patience like he did in movies like Khatarnak or Dharuvu."

"Are you a fan Mr Vedam? I mean a diehard fan of the leading man or the leading lady?"

"Not exactly. But I do love Puri Jagannath's movies. He is the director of course. I like his philosophy and the message he so clandestinely puts across in his movies. Look at a brilliant line in this movie for instance - God must reward those who work and not those who pray. Otherwise, we will all be praying; not working. What a beautiful thought it is! There are sparks of brilliance Dr. Pressman. Truly inspired writing in the movie."

"Did you like his other movies?"

"Sure. Loved Neninthe and even Nenu Naa Rakshasi. Again, it is a movie where the heroine has a good role - an absolute no-no in the male dominated Telugu movie industry. But hated the comedy track in that movie. I think that is main reason for the debacle of the movie."

"Tell me this Mr. Vedam, there are movies that have a nice concept but the execution goes really haywire. Are you by any chance, subconsciously of course, extending an olive branch to Puri Jagannath just because you found the concept very cool?"

"I don't think so. It is not that the movie is preachy. Yes, there is a nice message and it is conveyed in a nice manner. Not too subtle of course but not totally in the face too. The movie has loads of entertainment and is shot extremely well. Graphics work and camera work come together so nicely in this movie that you are left spellbound in a couple of scenes - especially during a car chase scene and in the penultimate song of the movie. Cinematography is top notch."

"Just a second Mr Vedam" Mr Pressman presses a button. "Julie, book two tickets for the movie this gentleman has just seen."

"Whoa! What was that?" I stare at him.

"Well, I wanna see what the fuss is all about."

"You have already seen the concept in another movie. In fact two movies. But you wouldn't have seen the second anyway."

"Really?"

"Sliding Doors? Does it ring a bell? Gwyneth Paltrow?"

"Oh yeah, what if and what if not - interspersed?"

"Exactly. But here it is not interspersed but is one after another."

"So it is a rip off."

"Hardly. The concept is similar but it is a generic philosophical question. Anyone can ask that question. There is always an innovative and new answer. This movie is one such answer. And it raises some truly thoughtful questions too."

"So why do you think there is so much of negativity around that movie?"

"I don't know. And it baffles me really. It has all the ingredients of a masala pot boiler. Where has it failed to touch the viewers?"

"Religion?"

"Oh that. Hmm.. Yes Brahmanandam and Kovai Sarala as Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi Devi is a bitter pill to swallow but to be fair to Puri Jagan, they have enacted the roles with utmost dignity. No cheap comedy or blasphemous acting."

"Music then? Bollywood movies are full of songs and dances. Right?"

"Ugh! This is not a Bollywood movie but that besides the point. I found the songs to be well shot and absolutely hummable. Background score is pretty decent too. OK. That last song when the credits roll up is totally unnecessary but it is right at the end. So you can just walk away."

"So you don't find anything even remotely negative about that movie?"

"That is what is scary! I really don't. There are logical loopholes of course and under a magnifying glass, I am sure you can see all the pores in the fabric but this is a Telugu movie and not a Discovery documentary. In fact I would argue that this movie probably more logical than Mission Impossible 4 but yeah! That is a Hollywood movie and so we are not supposed to find negatives in it."

"Thanks for the compliment on Hollywood movies!"

"Just returning your compliment on Bollywood movies."

"So why are you here Mr. Vedam?"

"When I say I like this movie, I get responses like 'You are so full of it Venu', 'You talked about logical flaws in Komaram Puli and not in this. Why this double standards' etc. I truly want to know if I am biased or really "full of it" if you know what I mean.

"Mm hmm"

"People misunderstood me the other day when I said I would write reviews only on movies that were like RDB or Okka Magaadu. What I meant was - I should like a movie like I liked RDB or I should hate a movie like I hated Okka Magaadu. I didn't mean that every movie I liked would be at the same level as RDB!"

"Are you going to write a review of this movie, Mr. Vedam?"

"I am thinking about it. Can I get the transcript of this talk for my reference?"

"We will see. But let us get serious first. I want you to come for another session. Tom will fit you into the schedule. Depending on the outcome of that meeting, we will chalk out the next steps whether you need more sessions or medication."

"Medication? You are not serious!"

"I am. The very fact that you walked into a psychiatrist's office and paid 300$ an hour just because you liked a movie that everyone hated, is reason enough to put you on medication but we will take that call later."

I stand up and walk to the door.

"Mr. Vedam"

I turn around.

"So what do you think would have happened had you not watched that movie today?"

"Interesting thought. Perhaps I would be sitting in a park watching butterflies flap their wings."

"And?"

I think for a moment and realization dawns upon me. "I would have come running into your office when I realized I was sitting in a park observing butterflies! Something must be wrong with me!"

"So either way I get my 300$"

"And Puri, his string of flops!"

"One last question Mr Vedam, as I am about to watch this movie. What is your rating of this movie?"

"Why do you care Mr Pressman? Shouldn't you form your own opinion about the movie rather than depend on some dumb ass's rating to the second significant digit?"

"Well, but a rating does help in deciding whether to see a movie or not. We can't see all the movies. Can we?"

"Good point. But you can see all the movies you want to see. And for that, you need not depend on the rating. Had I paid heed to the reviews of this movie, I wouldn't have seen it and that would have been a mistake."

"Ok. Give me a qualitative rating. Should I watch it or not?"

"As long as you understand that appreciating any work of art is a matter of personal preference, sure - go ahead and watch it. But don't charge me 600$ next time if you don't like the movie."

With that I walk out of the office of Mr. Pressman. The blue sky is lovely. I wait for the bus 12B as I make a mental note of watching all future movies of Puri Jagannath without fail.

The End.
