His modus operandi was to engage men who have Indian passports but were in need of money to act as the husband of the female client.when they approached the US consulate seeking visa. Vijay Bhat was approached by Vaishali to help her in obtaining a US visa so that she could meet her fiance in New Jersey. For this, Vijay Bhat demanded Rs 35 lakh and an agreement was reached. Meanwhile, Rajesh, a friend of Vijay Bhat, lured Yadneshwar Thakur, who was in need of money and in possession of an Indian passport. On August 14, Yadneshwar Thakur was sent to the US consulate, Hyderabad, to pose as Vaishali's husband. Vaishali was in possession of various fake documents, including a passport. However, the consulate authorities rejected her visa application. Subsequently, when the trio-Vijay, Yadneshwar and Vaishali-were at Aanchal hotel, Nampally, they were picked up.
