Though I did not like RM's initial movies, i have a respect for him for his hard work towards the movie and its publicity. As most of other NRIs, I also felt that his words are very harsh and the way he is singling out the NRIs in US. In US, eega collected on par with any major star's block buster. Infact several of us watched Eega to encourage different kind of telugu movies. Piracy is not just happening in US or by H1B, Green card holders. Basically there are three categories of patrons in US: 1) No matter what, they don't go to theaters to watch movie. They will watch pirated movies when available. If you are targeting these crowds, no one has an objection. But this crowd is minority and is every where (not just in US) 2) Telugu movie lovers, they watch good movie in theaters. Majority of the US crowd belong to this category. Reasons they may watch pirated movies are: i) Sometimes they are not able to watch the movie in theaters because of several problems in the life. With their interest towards movies they cannot resist watching a movie. ii) They watch in theater once or twice, but they still want to watch it again. iii) Some people do not live near to theaters (who live in remote places). They have no option to watch movie in theaters. iv) Most of the theaters, which are screening telugu movies are substandard. Infact, these theaters are worse than the theaters in my small city back in Andhra. Sound system is worse, maintenance of toilets is awkward. People hate to pay $15-$30 for these kinds of facilities to watch a Ferrari like telugu movie. Telugu movie collections are still reaching over a million means that we NRIs would love to watch Telugu movies, not because telugu movies are superior to hollywood movies. Hollywood movies in good theaters would only cost $7-9 minus any promotional discounts. 3) These section of audience hardly watch telugu movies. May be because of their kids are reluctant to watch or because of the quality of theaters/movies. Producers can try reaching out to larger audience by reducing the price of the ticket and screen in quality theaters. For ex. in Seattle area, only Bommarillu, Dookudu and Oosaravalli were screened in good theaters. Rest of them is getting screened in worse theaters available in the area. RM just cannot declare war against movie lovers and hoping to get profit from that. Infact, he should thank US viewers for giving such a great response for a reasonably good telugu movie. This kind of run is only dream for some big stars. PS: I hate to watch piracy movies or movies in bad theaters. If the theater is not good, i will try to wait until the DVD is released.
