Damaak Kharaab & Ishan : thanks! So we have one 30year old winning against a very wily and crafty player! can we have a repeat of that on the men's side too?  I am kind of torn! Would have supported murray against any other tennis player in history [except maybe sampras]. Against federer, just cannot! Whoever wins, this is going to be a major shot in the arm. obviously much more so for Murray than Fed! Fed will have to play like he did in the semis. Serve and forehand should be firing consistently and no going AWOL like he has been doing for the past 3-4 years! Murray will have to settle into a good balance between offense and defense. There is now way he can go on the offensive for long stretches against Fed, but the good news for murray is that great defense is Federer's kryptonite. So, i hope lendl doesn't repeat the mistakes he did in his 2 wimbledon finals by having murray play a game that doesn't sync with his strengths. fed wins in 3 25% chance, fed in 4 = 45%, fed in 5 = 5% m in 3 = 5%, m in 4 = 5%, m in 5 = 15% I have no idea who is going to benefit from a closed roof. djokovic said it helped his return indoors because of the humidity, but federer is way too good indoors and he did dust off djokovic real easy in the semis under closed roof! i would say, closed roof = Y factor, and pressure on murray VS pressure on Fed = X factor! all i want is a good match......probably a 4/5 setter......for murray's sake.... If he looses in 3 straight sets......it dents his confidence......for future..... no shame in loosing to federer.......its the way it happens......is more of concern for me.... yeap! the 2 best defensive players of the nadal era. federer had similar problems with the 2 best defensive players in his era = hewitt/nalbandian. he turned those 2 around. realistically, he might end with a losing record against djokovic/nadal/murray. maybe you are right FF, but i feel murray plays his best tennis outside slams. lesser the limelight, better he does. and slams lo his performance tapers as business end comes calling. fed/nad/djokovic opposite..... 2nd week lo gears change chestharu, higher gears higher performance. maybe murray will do it tomorrow! but how come a guy who beats fed in straight sets in MS series finals cannot even keep the match close in a) GS b) in matches in London. and that trend can be seen against nadal ( a guy against whom he should never be 0-3 on grass!) look at how djokovic manhandled rafa in the wimbledon final last year! anyway, murray's game matches very well with federer because he can defend as good as rafa and also has lot more variety than rafa, better volleying than rafa! where he lacks is focus/mental strength that rafa brings. it doesn't seem like he is indifferent to the hype. from what i have seen henman punched much above his abilities. he is a much less talented player than murray but still produced 5semi-finals and 9 qfs and he lost most of them to the eventual champion! i hope murray puts up a better show than his last 3 slam finals. else he will equal his coach's record of losing the 1st 4 slam finals he played What the executioner did after he was done with his job. how is that not a factor. 2011 AO final. more than half the journos in attendance were british. and AO is the least important of slams. Wimbledon is the WC of tennis. WC finals in mumbai lo sangakkara and sachin ki same pressure ante, it doesn't make sense. The pressure on murray is just insane. Find me a preview to the final which will not mention this. Ofcourse Fed has pressure too, but murray has that pressure too of winning his 1st slam after choking in 1st 3 without winning a set and so on! The British hype is the X factor. If it was djokovic who was british instead of murray, I would bet my house that djokovic would turn it to his advantage - davis cup crowd and all that. Murray seems incapable of this or so it has been. He has beaten Fed everywhere. but in slams he is 0-2 and in london he is 0-2. he won 1 set out of 11 in those 4 matches. This match is a GS final in London. those are the facts. We will see how murray handles the pressure. If he can treat this match as a match in shanghai or Indian wells, california, he will have a better shot at the title. so far he has never done that. he has won one set in 3 matches against nadal and 1 set in the other semi-final with a-rod! now he meets the Big Daddy of Wimbledon! Agreed Fed is past his prime, but he was past his prime in 2008 USO and 2010 AO too and murray could not use it. anyway, you cannot deny pressure being a huge factor in this match. i dont agree with this british hype point.....too much is made out of this..... if any he must be pretty used by it as it was for 7 years.....fed fans may count this as huge but for me Murray didnt show any signs of breakdown because of hype on court...... if murray looses it is because of his talent and on the day play.....and same if he wins...... talking about pressure.....is fed the god dont feel any? two years away from no.1 now on the brink.....if he cannot do it now....not many would think he could come this close.... 7th time.....this may be his best last chance at wimbledon..... so ila choosukunto...pothey....each have their own pressures.....over that loosing to murray and reading british press....is worst than suicide in a hotel room for an opponent........ so cut it...... well said! the big hitters started troubling fed only since 2009 - delpo uso and tsonga in montreal and then berdych, soderling and so on! I believe that is mainly because fed's become a step slower and his defence is below the lofty standards of 2004-7! overall, fed relishes playing the big hitters and he single handedly nullified roddick's career. roddick's serve and forehand is much bigger than anything tsonga, delpotro have thrown at fed the last few years. fed of 2004-7 would have chewed them, spit them out! [which he still does on his best days! ee year he beat delpotro 3 or 4 times on the hardcourts without dropping a set!] murray's defense is on par with nadal's defense when it comes to hardcourts/grass. his offense is better than nadal's too but the 2 biggest problems murray faces are a) the british hype - it's like the pressure on srt when he walks out in the WC final or messi/rooney when they play for their countries! it is too much to handle even for the best of the best! b) the variety in his game. sometimes it is better to be one-dimensional like rafa than have the variety that players like murray/gasquet/safin/federer possess. off the 4, only fed has been able to tame the variety with single-minded determination. these guys can play so many shots and are so talented that they make things too complex for themselves. federer had the same problem in the beginning, but once he won wimbledon in 2003, he was like archimedes after discovering the buoyancy principle! [no! he did not run naked on the streets, but i mean he discovered the winning formula!] i believe murray MIGHT do similar stuff[not 16GS, but definitely 5-8, if he can unlock that magical formula for success. so far he has failed! now he has to do it against the greatest player in the tennis universe on the most sacred tennis court in the world! I would go with Fed. The problem with Murray's game is that he is a wily, crafty player which is exactly the kind of play that will not work against Federer. You can't outthink Federer. Almost all of Federer's losses in GS' have been against heavy hitters like Tsonga or relentless defenders like Djoker or Nadal. The only way that Murray can win this is to run down every ball and put it back in play and exhaust Federer and take him to 5. Otherwise, this is for Federer to lose. | ||
