Life is like racing on a track. When you come across curves, you HAVE to slow down and take it easy. But the key is to get to top acceleration after you finsh the curve. Jeevitam lo anthey, you face so many obstacles, personal issues, love, wedding kids, health, money etc. Slow down, enjoy the turn, learn the necessity of slowing down and take off from there. The above questions are quite valid and interesting.. Until my MPhil journey, it probably covers 30 to 40 percent of my achievements if I consider whole of my achievements until today. After my M.Phil, there are whole lot of different things that I have done. Ph.D., Love life, World Bank experience, Teaching experience at US Universities, Interaction with heads of political parties in Andhra, Interaction with academic personalities and last but not the least DB experience and friends that I made in DB. If one thinks that he/she achieved some thing great that is the end of achievements. Do what you like. Take the things that come on your way. Start liking them if you like them. If you do not like it try to exit from it. Achievements should build confidence. Do not tag your achievements to your name or prestige. Achievements are natural which are outcomes of what you do overtime. Coming to role of luck, hard work and born talent in achievements, if you take a very short-run or short-run, they seem to matter. But, I see life as a continuum of say 70 years, they do not seem to matter. If you take 70 years of anybody's life and try to see the role of luck and born talent in his/her 70 years of achievement they (luck and born talents) would have a meager quotient. Try to see life as a continuum of 70 years rather than pieces. If one sees life as a continuum of 70 years, all adjustments can be possible and moreover there won't be any pressure and /stress on him/her. Do not work too hard or be lazy. Both are not good. Self discipline is very important. There are several ups and downs in my life. For that matter, in any body's life. No one's life is a linear line or a parabola. It is rather cyclical. There are times I outperformed and times when I under-performed. We should know how to shift gears. When we under-perform, we have an opportunity to see and / experience the other side of the coin. Hence, every bit of life is a LEARNING EXPERIENCE. We should be governed by a set of ideologies. However, ideologies are also dynamic in nature. For instance, I believe in "simplicity is the way of life". I see God in every human being especially the deprived rather than GOD as GOD per se. I strongly believe in gender equality. I believe in 'Knowledge is more powerful than money". As we move forward in life, we tune some of the ideologies to changing times and add some more ideologies to the existing list. I 'll assess my achievements when I am 60 years, not to boast that I achieved some thing and others did not.. I assess my achievements so as to determine whether I lived a meaningful life given my endowments. We are speck in a mighty ocean. |

Academic Journey (M.Phil) Addendum 1: During the final year of my M.Phil one of my Telugu friends (male) at CDS applied for an Assistant Professor post at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in reserved category. He got a call for the interview at the end of the second year. My friend has decided not to go for the interview. One, he was not confident about getting this post as he was about to complete his M.Phil. People who have completed Ph.D. applied for this post. Two, he had lot of M.Phil dissertation work pending, and the deadline for submission was fast approaching. Three, he has to go to Mumbai for the interview. He did not have the train tickets reserved. When I came to know that he decided not to go for the interview, I spoke to him for 2 days to convince him of this great opportunity. He was giving one reason or the other to avoid going to the interview. Some how, I put lot of pressure on him and finally convinced him saying that if you do not get reservation (railway ticket)you need not go. If you get reservation, you should go. I took him to the railway station to reserve a ticket to Mumbai. We stood in the queue, and finally came to know that there are no berths/seats available. He wanted to go back to hostel. I said we will go to the concern authorities, and explain that we have an interview. He was hesitant to come. Some how, I convinced him. We went to the manager, and explained the situation. The manager asked him to attach his interview copy so that he will be allotted berth under a special category. This is how, my friend got the reservation, and finally went to Mumbai. He attended the interview and came back to CDS, Thiruvanathapuram. When people asked about how did his interview go. He said he may not get it because several people with Ph.Ds' and experience attended the interview. After couple of weeks, he received a letter stating that he was selected for the Assistant Professor post at TISS. This was a big news among the students as well as faculty. This was a big news because a student with no Ph.D and who has not even submitted his M.Phil got a full-time permanent position in Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). Now this guy is a senior associate professor at TISS. He completed his Ph.D. while he was a faculty at TISS... |

Academic Journey (M.Phil) After writing my MA finals, I went to Economics Department at Nagarjuna University. I casually met my head of the department. During the conversation, he told me that he received a brochure of M.Phil programme at Center for Development Studies, Thiruvanathapuram. He added that this is India's best M.Phil programme in Applied Economics and is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The selection process is based on a research proposal, recommendation letters and personal interview. I have no clue writing a research proposal as I did not orient my self towards research having had no training at Nagarjuna University. My head of the department and another professor gave the recommendation letters. As far as research proposal is concerned, I took couple of ruled papers, and jotted my research proposal's title as " Factors influencing volume and pattern of stock market in India". Given my practical knowledge at the stock market in Vijayawada, and the knowledge that I derived by reading Economic Times from my BA days on wards, I wrote the proposal. This is not a typed proposal. The proposal was hand-written, and was the first and final drafts. In fact, I do not know the concept of 'draft' at that time. After writing the proposal, I posted it along with the recommendation letters that were sealed. I got an interview call from Center for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvanathapuram. The interviews took place at two places in India, one in Thiruvanathapuram and the other in Chennai. I was called to Chennai for the personal interview. The people who interviewed me were very prominent in the field, and in fact renowned World class economists. There were several students from various parts of India and from very good universities attended the interview. I attended the interview and gave my answers without any fear. After having selected I came to know that I faced the interview with lot of clarity and innovative ideas - according to the interview board. One of the students who attended the interview was from University of Hyderabad, and was a son of professor at the University of Hyderabad. This professor is very famous and highly respected, and comes to TV9, NTV etc. His son was not selected by the interview board for lack of clarity and superficiality. In other words, there are still institutes in India where recommendations and / father's position does not matter. Hats off to interview board. I applied for M.Phil at CDS, JNU (New Delhi) and University of Hyderabad. I got admission to all 3 places. I selected to join CDS, Thiruvanathapuram. Our M.Phil class was a tiny class with 9 students to start with. 5 Malayalis, 3 Telugus, and 1 Bengali. Gender break-up is 3 boys and 6 girls. One of the most beautiful girl of our class got married to an NRI and left the course after 6 months. M.Phil course is for 2 years. I year of rigorous course work and 1 year of working on dissertation. In the faculty list at CDS, there are two professors whose origin is Andhra. I met one of the senior most Telugu faculty at CDS on the campus. He asked me about my native place, and with in no time oka "pedarayudu" lanti story tayarayyindi. I want to skip this story. This is the most interesting experiences of my life. Given the "pedarayudu' kind of episode, I was asked to take dinner at his home. During all 2 years of my stay at CDS, his family treated me as their son. I skip all those sentimental episodes. I had umpteen number of dinners' at his house. There are two important posts for which M.Phil first year students will be selected. One is class representative and the other is canteen representatives. The Bengali girl in my class was aspiring for that post of class representative. Her husband was in second year M.Phil. They are very shrewd. Some how, I did not like her attitude. From Andhra, we are three people. One is male and other is a female besides me. The male became a good friend within no time.Even though the female is from Andhra, she did her studies in Delhi. There is one Malayali who was down-to-earth. Our programme coordinator asked us to come up with names to the two posts. One as Class representative and two students for canteen. We had a small meeting. I proposed the down-to-earth Malayali for Class representative. I said that I am interested in Canteen representative. When I said I am interested in canteen representative, the Telugu girl wanted to join me as canteen representative. As I was the canteen representative, I was given special attention in canteen. I made the canteen people to serve white rice along with the boiled rice.. As prices were rising, the canteen people gave a notice that they would hike prices. Students are not willing to pay higher prices. The canteen was maintained by SEWA (Self Employed Womens Association). They are poor women. Good people. I convened a meeting and allowed every one to express their views. They was lot of intellectual discourse on this because all of them were future economists.. Finally, I summed up saying we shall allow certain percentage of rise in prices, and at the same time we should write to the director about a rise in our fellowships. I promised the students (M.Phil and Ph.D) that I'll go to SEWA office and negotiate the prices.. Next day, I went to SEWA office with my classmate (the other canteen representative)and negotiated the prices. My classmate acknowledged me that I have lot of skills and added further saying that you are a good negotiator. Our representation to rise the fellowships went to the director and he placed it before the governing body and gave a rise in fellowships with retrospective effect. CDS was a beautiful place. Every student gets a room with balcoly which is the size of a single bedroom apartment for meager Rs. 50 (fifty only) There was lot of leaning that took place at CDS. My whole perspective of life has changed. It is here, I decided not to market my marriage. In other words, I made a oath not to take dowry in my marriage. When I joined CDS, I was planning to work on Stock market for my dissertation. As there were no expert faculty on stock market at CDS, I decided to work on yet another passionate area that is rural economy. My work was a multi-disciplinary work with data sources that were never tapped. I did a field survey of my village for more than 6 months tirelessly, and interacted with every person of the village. This village had 700 households (around 3000 people). I went into genealogies of families of village, land markets from sub-registrar's office, archives and several other sources to make a dissertation to the best of my abilities. I dedicated my M.Phil dissertation to the people of my VILLAGE and my grandfather and grandmother. My M.Phil supervisor guided some 50 M.Phil students in his 30 years of academic career. He proudly says that my M.Phil dissertation is the best in his whole career. He added further saying that my M.Phil dissertation gave him the utmost satisfaction while guiding. My M.Phil dissertation went to one of the strict examiner who was with University of Hyderabad. After reading my dissertation, he gave extra-ordinary report and gave A+. When there was a village studies work that was going on after I submitted my M.Phil under the leadership of my M.Phil examiner, I was given an opportunity to contribute an article in the edited volume. All contributors were senior faculty from various universities in Andhra except me. At that time, I did not even have a Ph.D. The so called Prof. Kodandaram was one of the contributors to this volume. One senior professor. Late. G. Parthasarathy was yet another contributor to the volume. Late Prof. G.Parthasarathy was an economic advisor to Late. Smt. Indira Gandhi. Prof. G.Parthasarathy's son is Ramana Gogula. The experiences and memories at CDS are unlimited, and above all CDS shaped my personality. |
