భారతదేశంలో అత్యంత దుర్మార్గమైన పాలకులలో ఒకడిగా పేరుమోసిన రాజు మధురను పాలించిన కంసుడు. శ్రీకృష్ణుడి వల్ల తనకు ముప్పు తప్పదని తెలుసుకున్న కంసుడు తన రాజ్యంలో ఆసమయంలో పుట్టిన పసిబిడ్డలందర్నీ చంపేయమని ఆఙాపిస్తాడు. ఐనా భయం తగ్గదు. మంత్రులందరినీ సమావేశపరిచి ఏం చేద్దామని అడుగుతాడు. కంసుడి మామ జరాసంధుడి వద్ద ఎంతో అనుభవం గడించిన బాహుకుడనే ముసలిమంత్రి ఒక సలహా ఇస్తాడు. "రాజా ప్రజలు స్వతహాగా పిరికివాల్లు. మీరు వారిని కొంతకాలం గుప్పెట్లో పెట్టుకోవచ్చు. కానీ మిమ్మల్ని అంతం చేసేవాడు ఎప్పుడోకప్పుడు ఎవరోకరు వస్తారని వాల్లు నమ్ముతూనే ఉంటారు. వారిలోని ధర్మాగ్రహం రగులుతూనే ఉంటుంది. జ్ఞానులు వాల్లని చైతన్యవంతం చేస్తూనే ఉంటారు" అంటాడు. "ఐతే జ్ఞానులందరినీ చంపిస్తే" అంటాడు కంసుడు. "ఐనా కూడా ప్రకృతి సిద్ధమైన విజ్ఞత ప్రజలలోని ధర్మావేశాన్ని రక్షిస్తుంది. పరిస్థితులు ఏమాత్రం అనుకూలించినా అది తిరగబడుతుంది. కాబట్టి మీరెంతమందిని చంపినా ప్రయోజనం ఉండదు" అంటాడు మంత్రి. ఐతే ఏంచేద్దా మని కంసుడు అడుగుతాడు. "రాజా, జాగ్రత్తగా వినండి. ఖజానా లోని డబ్బును ప్రజలకు తాయిలాలివ్వటానికి ఉపయోగించిండి. ప్రజలకు అడ్డదారుల్లో సంపాదనని, విలాసాల్ని, మద్యాన్ని అలవాటు చేయండి. నీతి, ధర్మం, విలువలు అక్కర్లేదని చెప్పండి. అవినీతికి పాల్పడినవారిని ప్రోత్సాహించండి. శీలం పెద్దవిషయం కాదని ప్రచారం చేయండి. ఎప్పుడైతే అలా ప్రజలు పాలకుల మీదే ఆధారపడి మత్తులో మునిగితేలుతుంటారో అపుడు వాళ్లు ధర్మం, ప్రేమ, నిబద్ధత, విలువలు గురించి మాట్లాడే విజ్ఞుల్ని పరిహసిస్తారు. మీ చేతికి మట్టి అంటకుండా ప్రజలే మంచివాళ్లను అవమానిస్తారు. అసమర్థులని అవహేళన చేస్తారు. ఆవుల మందలా మీ వెంట పడిఉంటారు. అపుడు ఎంతటి గొప్పవ్యక్తి వచ్చినా మీ ఆధిపత్యానికి ఢోకా ఉండదు" అని బాహుకుడు సలహా ఇస్తాడు.

ఈనాటి మన భారతాన్ని చూస్తే ఆ గ్రంథం ఎందుకు అంత ప్రాచుర్యం పొంది, మహా గ్రంథం గా నిలబడిందో అర్థం ఔద్ది. ఇదే కలియుగ భారతదేశపు రూపం..
