EK - good point on the licensing of Win 8 and competing with the OEMs. That is the same problem that Google has or will have in future after the Motorola acquisition. Of course Android is free while Win 8 is licensed at a price. So the problem comes down to pricing and GTM. One important arrow in the quiver of MS is that MS because of all its patent battles, now gets $10 + on almost every Android phone as royalty. Getting Samsungs, HTCs etc into the fold offering a litigation free OS at the same price of $10 or say $20 and take some kind of revenue share on App sales etc would be one kind of GTM strategy. | ||

EK - am sure there will be an inscreen keyboard. How can you say it does not? The cover with the keyboard will be an optional priced at $30-50 for those who wan't a keyboard experience. And they are talking about two versions here - one ARM which is the lite version and the other is the Pro version with the Intel Ivy bridge. Surely, they won't be launching the full Win 8 on the lite version. | ||

EK - i do feel that HP will not waste money on their Web OS any more. Sooner or later, HP and Dell being a part of the Windows ecosystem for so long will just find it easier to migrate to Windows. It is not as if their Android offerings have been a success that they should have any resistance to Win 8. Their switching costs are too little. It will be more important for MS to get Samsung to its fold. I thing Google will be the one which will be hurt more by this than Apple. Till date, Google has not found a way to make money on Android and now it will slowly find its base eaten away before it could start extracting value. | ||

in my view, this is what will make it a disaster. There is a reason apple created the inscreen kbd. it is to make ppl remind constantly, that it is not a computer, but a fun toy. dont expect too much from it, have fun. like you dont expect much from a wii-handheld or a nintendo. msft has done exactly opposite, they take a very light weight ARM cpu, slap on a heavy OS, provide a flimsy kbd and a back rest to make it feel like a computer. It will be horribly slow and underwhelm a user. they will go insanely ballistic and return the product. also, they are taking on a hardware fight with apple and a software fight with Android. can they fight on both fronts at the same time? Fun aside, coming back to investing, I hope this does not indicate some serious endorsement issues for Win8 on tablet platform. Take their two biggest partners HP and Dell. HP has clearly said they are bringing back HPTP next year with WebOS or Android. Perhaps Dell said the same. If you let Apple, HP and Dell push tables without Windows, MSFT has really nothing left in that segment. It has already lost hope of the Phone. Perhaps this move is to not let the Tablet market go without a fight. I agree, for most windows users, the #1 issue is the keyboard with special keys and not being aware of the productivity short-cuts and not understanding tri-state nature of the icons in the tray. EK garu - Naa lanti nasthiks ki Promised Land enduku le. Part of the problem, with my MBP, of course lies with the bad Office versions that MS has built for the Mac. But there are many niggling OS issues that i find baffling how a design and user experience focussed company like Apple got wrong. In many cases, where one key would suffice, MBP requires too. This might be okay for the mouse users, but for keyboard users like me, it is a pain. And on iPad2, the full USB ports are extremely useful. The earlier tabs with full USB Ports like the Thrive were too thick or those like the Asus Transformer had the USB ports on the keyboard and not the tablet. Moreover these were screwed up Android OS' anyway. Probably MS will take me to the promised land and make me a believer again. | ||

I have an ipad2 and i hardly end up using it. To those who claim that ipad is be all and end all of tablets, i do hope that MS puts up some fight here. There are really basic functionalities that i find so irritating in Ipad - for instance, you can't delete photos in your photos folder unless you are connected to the laptop (you can only delete photos that you have downloaded to the ipad or taken with the ipad). Viewing movies in another big pain - i have loads of movies which i can't view unless i convert it to the Apple format Mp4 or whatever the heck that might be. Of course, there are workarounds like using Oplayer or some other lite version that are free. The lite versions won't let you read subtitles though. Then you have to end up paying additionally for a player to see your own movies. Wtf. The ibooks app has to be the sorriest book reading app out there. Less said on that the better. I recently got an Apple Mac book Pro at work. I do believe that the OS and interfaces are great. However they are a lot of pain points where Windows does better. Take the simple case of deleting files from Finder. You have to do Control+ Delete. In Windows, you just have to press delete. Viewing photos too is simpler in Windows. Once you open a photo, you just keep pressing the down arrows and you can go to the next. But in Preview, you have to select all the photos and then have them open in Preview. To EK and all Apple Fanboys, do accept that there are a lot of weaknesses in the Apple products which competition can improve upon. | ||

I am not a sell side expert, but today's MSFT announcement is a *screaming* sell signal. Here's why: MSFT enjoys a whopping 60% gross margins on their sales because they are a pure software compnay. In many cases, all they need to do is print some laser holographic labels. Their products also have long tails. For example, they still make money on XP & Vista after Win7 is released long ago. On the other hand, most hardware products are loss leaders. Except AAPL, nobody enjoys even a 10% margin on a h/w product. Like Zune and their disastrous phone, MSFT will try to push this tablet at a huge loss to gain a foothold. Remember HP-Touchpad? Similar story. Only after a couple of Billions they will know if this is a wise thing or not.
