Tom Freidman and Nandan Nilekani argue about a flat world. There is not a bigger joke than this. Infosys competitors like IBM do not get freeland or tax holidays in their respective countries. I have increasingly come to believe that companies like Infosys are largely real estate companies now. Their land banks in many large cities rival a DLF probably. Their negotiations with the Bengal govt over their proposed devlt centre were too brazen and rightfully got kicked by Mamta. However i might dislike Mamta, she had courage in her convictions here. Infosys wanted a perpetual lease which is nothing but a sale and at some negligible rate. They wanted SEZ-like benefits so that they can avoid paying income tax for a few more years. And they wanted 100 acres of land for employing some 5-10 K people. I find Infosys too sly in all these discussions, TCS vallu antha brazen ga kanapadru. Why do they need 100 acres of land - to build golf courses??? Many of these IT companies take land far in excess of their requirements, at vastly discounted rates, get perpetual leases, never paid income taxes (because of the STPI benefits) or excise or sales tax or customs. Nobody ever questions them. Podduna lesthe, oka Mohandas Pai lekapothe Narayanmurthy or financial newspapers and economists act like holier than thous and talk about fiscal deficit and how we need to reduce subsidies on farm and fuel. But the revenue losses to the government from all these waivers and exemptions (not just to IT but the broader industry) are much larger than the subsidies to farmers which is a far more strategic industry than IT. If you can give lands free to industries, why can't you give them free to farmers. All this is a big nexus between big industries + politicians. Give something that is not yours for free, buy some lands alongside and make money on real estate. |
