first thing be humble. next, do not brag or lie. do not guess and land yourself in trouble. having said that, freely paint your vision if asked. focus on the opportunities in future than the threats. do not venture into threats unless asked. talk about how your work saved/earned big bucks in your current/previous jobs. but again do not exaggerate. ask them when your turn comes, what is it they are hiring you for. tell them that you read the job descr, but ask them to tell/talk about what will their most ideal candidate will do in that position. ya, some times they refer to this as 'worker bees'. A lot of people cannot explain beyond what they do or their team does. It is important to understand how your activities map to the company/org priorities. Also, you should be able to explain how -what you do fits in the grand schema of things. Basically you have to have the big picture and able to relate to different moving pieces within your organization. And ofcourse a knowledge of your industry trends like filmbuff & netsaint mentioned is a must. In any interview, when you are asked to explain what you do, do not start with your individual tasks/projects. Give a 2-3 line summary of what your org does and how your work rolls up before going into the weeds. |

I am a director in my company. But i am in the M&A/ Finance teams. I do not exactly know how the interviews work on the tech side, but as an interviewer i would generally look at smartness and energy very importantly. I am not that interested in academics because if the guy has been to a good engg school or b-school, those things are already taken care of by the pedigree and scores at school. I don't have to second guess those schools. I look at personalities who can be a good fit within the team. I am personally interested in folks who are quite aware of things outside their core domain - history, politics, science, sports. Any kind of passions outside their core are important, not that they are important for the work but because they signal that the candidate can multi-task, has enough intellectual curiousity, can learn fast etc. I have also noticed that people working in tech do know have much of a knowledge of the industry they are working in. agree, what you said is very relevant to techIT/engg orgs/companies, esp. startups where I don't have much experience. However, it is much different in the business/operations world. Again the sales world is different, and I can't speak to it.

While ago, first time got interviewed by 5 directors and 2 VPs for a contract to hire position They are much much cooler than the regular junta who are always trying to assess if you are a threat to their job. Anyday it is easier to impress them than your team members, that's why I rather like a top-down or a flat interview style. I personally felt that you could be much more open and share your aspirations (they do like a dreamer, someone with a vision and can execute during ambiguity). They are interested in your experiences, approach, personality and whether you can fit in the org rather than your individual achievements because they won't even give the time of day if you don't fit certain criteria. So, going there and reciting the number of lines of code you wrote or number of people/budget you managed will be silly unless asked. Also, always lookup them up in linkedin and other resources - research before meeting up, so that you know enough to have a casual conversation to start with. I didn't know all that then, learnt in a Executive Shadowing program. |
