Ever since his film Toliprema (1998) set a new trend in romantic dramas in Telugu director Karunakaran has by and large stuck to this popular genre and has been trying to weave different stories within this kind. When some films of his succeeded others sank without trace. But his last two movies - Ullasanga Utsahamga (2008) and Darling (2010) were big hits. So his new film Endukante Premanta has raised high expectations. The soft-spoken director speaks to Telugucinema.com as the movie hits the screens this weekend.
Love is USP of EP

In Endukante Premanta (EP) love is ever-present in every scene. This is the key to everything that happens in the movie thus we came up with the title - Endukante Premanta (The Reason Is Love). Love is USP of the movie.

Freshness in screenplay

The novelty factor in Endukante Premanta is the way the movie is told and the story is also unique although it is a romantic drama. I always believe in narrating differently only freshness works for a love story apart from chemistry between the lead pair. Ram and Tamannah both are good-looking people and have shared a very beautiful chemistry further elevating the mood of the movie.

I love all my heroes

Although Pawan Kalyan is my personal favorite a known fact I love all my heroes to the core. The moment I start working with a hero I grab all the DVDS of their previous movies and watch them. After analyzing them I start thinking how can I present them differently. Only then that I write script keeping the positives of the said hero.

Ram is a directors delight. He gives his best to every scene and is focused. He is even more energetic in the film.

My first love was a failure

Yes I agree that I have been making love stories and would continue to do so because that is what I believe in. One should always do what he or she knows best.

Before I became a director I was in love but my love story had a sad ending. Today I am happily married to another woman and my wife has brought happiness into my life. Yet that unfulfilled love of mine pushes me to create love stories.

No introduction of heroine in white dress!

From Toliprema to Darling my heroines were mostly presented in angel like appearance. EP comes out sans this appearance.

Balu Mahendra's montages are inspiration

Many people and other filmmakers complimented me for montages in various films of mine but the inspiration behind these montages are two great directors - Balu Mahendra and Fazil. The reason why I use more montages in films are because they are the best in depicting time lapse without boring the audiences.

EP releases in Tamil three weeks later

We shot the Tamil version simultaneously but the work for Tamil is still under progress. We would be releasing the movie three weeks later. The reason for making it as bilingual I felt that the Tamil audiences would also be surprised with the novelty of this script. From now on I have decided to shoot movies both in Telugu and Tamil from now onwards.

Scriptwriter Kona Venkat as actor

Kona Venkat who wrote several hit films including Ready Adhurs Dookudu Kandireega etc - has been my good friend and has worked with me in previous films. During our scripts session I started noticing his gestures and expressions and felt that he'd be apt for one different character that we have created and asked him to do it himself and he obliged my request.

My next will be released in a year

For strange and unavoidable reasons both Darling and Endukante Premanta took two years each to get a release but I won't take that much time for next film. It would probably be out by next year and I guarantee it.

Best three in my career

1. Toliprema 2. Ullasanga Utsahamga 3. Darling

Five love stories that inspired me are..

1. Sagara Sangamam (1983)

I have seen this film 27 times so far. It is essentially love story although it deals with dance. Several beautiful scenes between Kamal and Jayaprada inspire me to make love stories. And one of the most memorable scenes in the movie is when Kamal's comes to his mother who is on death bed, she hands over him some money. That is the truth of life. When I was struggling as assistant director, my friends used to give me gifts or greeting cards on my birthdays, but my mom always used to send a cover with a letter and some money. I always feel emotional when I see this movie. This film has been a great inspiration to me and scores of other filmmakers of my generation in Telugu and Tamil film industries.

2. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

For the first time that a hero tells heroine in a film not to elope for marriage, instead seeks blessings of her parents and convinces them with his deeds. What better way than elevating heroism in a love story? It is trend setting movie and its impact is seen in every other romantic movie these days.

3. Moondram Pirai (Vasantha Kokila, 1982)

As I said, director Balu Mahendra is absolutely great in filming montages. This is the film that had lasting impression on me.

4. Seetakoka Chiluka (1981)

As I kid I watched the Tamil version, Alaigal Oivathillai (1981), in theatres and awestruck with its narration and great romance. From this film, I have learnt how to narrate movies with music seamlessly. Music and narration are so entwined in the film.

5. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988)

Hero and heroine falling in love while fighting each other for petty issues and their chemistry is one of the most beautiful moments I have seen.
