The Kapus of Telugu Desam from Godavari districts and Congress from Krishna and Guntur districts came together for Chiranjeevi and his Praja Rajyam. However, the political upsurge was short lived with Chirnajeevi merging his party with the Congress. Having lost their base in their respective parties and coming back again became indigestible and have found YSR Congress the best destination.Moreover, they are now rallying for Jaganmohan Reddy even in the urban areas touched by the wailing mother, Vijayamma, for her son. “We were with the Congress earlier but went to Chiranjeevi thinking he is our man. After PRP merged with the Congress, we have no place to go. We can’t go back to the same Congress with our heads down. We are looking at Jaganmohan Reddy as an alternative leader,” said Badita Shankar, a former Youth Congress president in the city who moved to PRP and now back in the YSR Congress. Interestingly, even women from this community, are moved by the statement of Vijayamma about the Congress victimising her family. The women, who are known to be lovers of unending serials, were found watching the news channels when Jagan was arrested and Vijayamma was holding protest on May 27. This move is seen as formation of a strong base for the YSR Congress by the Kapu community, which sailed with the Telugu Desam and Congress here. Vijayawada: The Kapus,once the strong vote bank for TDP and Congress, are now set to rally for the YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy. The recent developments, particularly the arrest of Jaganmohan Reddy from the midst of electioneering and the subsequent statement of his mother, Y S Vijayamma, seeking help from people to rescue her son from the alleged victimisation, had moved the community towards the new outfit. The Kapus, who constitute considerable vote bank in the coastal districts and who play a key role in the elections were with the Congress and TDP in Krishna and Guntur districts. The TDP benefited by the community in the two Godavari districts since its inception in 1983, while it could not win them in Krishna and Guntur districts. The influence of Congress leader late Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga, and his subsequent murder, perhaps, kept the community away from the Telugu Desam in these two districts. Though the community rallied behind Mohana Ranga in 1980s in the two Godavari districts, and leaders like Mudragada Padmanabham and Jakkampudi Ramamohan Rao, were instrumental in organizing Kapunadu in the Godavari districts, the community politically sailed with the Telugu Desam here and leaders like Kothapalli Subbarayudu benefited out of it. However, things have changed for the community in 2009 with the film star K Chiranjeevi floating the political party Praja Rajyam.
