There used to be a guy called Bhure Lal. Industrialists would lose sleep if they heard that name. More authentic source: Called to the Centre following Rajiv Gandhi's massive mandate in the 1984 General elections, he was appointed to the pivotal post of Finance Minister, where he oversaw the gradual relaxation of the license Raj as Rajiv had in mind. During his term as Finance Minister, he oversaw the reduction of gold smuggling by reducing gold taxes and the excellent tactic of giving the police a portion of the smuggled gold that they found. He also gave extraordinary powers to the Enforcement Directorate of the Finance Ministry, the wing of the ministry charged with tracking down tax evaders, then headed by Bhure Lal. Following a number of high-profile raids on suspected evaders – including Dhirubhai Ambani[1] and Amitabh Bachchan – Rajiv was forced to sack him as Finance Minister, possibly because many of the raids were conducted on industrialists who had supported the Congress financially in the past. However, Singh's popularity was at such a pitch that only a sideways move seemed to have been possible, to the Defence Ministry.[2] Once ensconced in South Block, Singh began to investigate the notoriously murky world of defence procurement. After a while, word began to spread that Singh possessed information about the Bofors defence deal[3] that could damage the Prime Minister's reputation. This is back in 1984-1988. For some reasons I do not exactly remember, VP Singh and Ambani did not get along. As soon as VP Singh became the Finance Minister in Rajiv Gandhi cabinet, he launched a FERA investigation on Ambani. ED came into news that time. Not many ppl knew that such a thing existed till then. They hired an agency called FairFax near DC to investigate Reliance FERA violations. Ambani and Wadia did not get along well. Mainly business rivalry. Before Reliance, Wadia's Bombay Dyeing was no 1 poly fiber maker. Reliance captued the market in a cutthroat price war. Wadia is a Pakistani, british citizen, so he was probed for FERA, for paying the hotel bills in Rupees one of the allegations, and his life was made miserable and eventually Bombay dyeing went out of business. RK Mehra was the owner of Orkay Polyesters. He was also Reliance rival. He had some skeletons in imports and exports. He was probed by ED too. He went out of business. Reliance survived mostly because they were in right and VP Singh was idiotically vengeful. but their reputation and stock price suffered a lot. Atleast back in the old days, ED used to have the scariest reputation. unlike CBI, ED is a very small highly secretive organization. They used to handle mostly FERA cases and economic offenses that cross the borders. Ambani, Wadia, RK Mehra all have been probed by ED at some point. ED chethilo padithe naki poyinatte.
