here is the model :- say you have something that you are giving groupons for. e.g. tickets to an event. so what groupon says is that they will do some marketing for you. and you will agree on a groupon that is 1/2 the actual value. 100 dollars worth dhi you are giving away for 51 dollars. May is the wrong month to go IPO of this size. They have increased the float at the last minute, second problem. Priced it atleast $10 more. $28 would have been very attractive. The business model is still intact. It's going to be a 0-sum game between FB and GOOG. Ppl are not going to use two platforms to search. they have to slug it out. IPO for any co is a big step. a lot of things change. transparency, quarterly results pressure, analysts ratings etc all take their toll. i think people are not using facebook for finding products yet. they rely on search engines for this, and until facebook comes up with a way to search the products being used by their friends, in a innovative way, they will not be able to have higher ad click rate. the like clicks, are a good strategy, but people forget what they have liked after a few hours. One Basic rule of finance that I believe, Value of any asset = Present Value of its expected future cash flows, adjusted to time value of money and risk taken. Valuation of any IPO is based on people's expectations from the company/stock.Investment Bankers come up with valuations using variety od valuation techniques such as Discounted cash flow, multiples/Relative valuation and so on.And 90% of the inputs into these models are just assumptions. Morgan Stanley was the lead Book runner, there were 30 other co-managers. Just like any other deal, most of the bulge bracket banks took a piece of it. Given the IPO price of $38/Share, total valuation is around 105 billion. Out of which, FB only sold 16 billion worth of stock to public. Primarily Ad- revenue. Future goals gurinchi vaadu sarigga cheppatledu andhuke chaala major institutions are staying away from the stock. There are few of specialized "Social Media" Portfolio Managers who did not apply for the IPO, surprising to see them stay away because they were managing ETFs.
