Saying that the gold buying is leading to current account deficits is bullshit. People do realise that the economy is stuck in a rut, there is a steep governance deficit and we seem to be facing a generational decline here. To face up to these circumstances, people are buying gold. Gold is not causing the CAD, it is other way around probably and it only reflects a larger malaise and the economic gloom that we are facing. I had said this in one of my stock market posts a few months back too, that you should not think of entering the Indian markets for some time and this is just coming true. | ||

No not really. When they're running a deficit b/c of gold imports that is a good thing for India. Their paper currency the Rupee, can't possibly compete w/ the value of gold especially in the last ten years when gold went from $250 to over $1500 an ounce. My two bit from my economics knowledge and ground reading - basically our current deficit is at obscene levels right now. Our current deficit has always been bad, but this time it is even more so. Current account deficits need to be balanced by capital account surpluses like FDI, CCDB lo members remittances, FII investments etc. But because of our sanka nakipoyina governance over the past 2-3 years, there is little coming in by way of capital account. So the balance has still to be achieved. And how is that balance achieved is that the rupee depreciates to such a level that the imports are costlier and exports cheaper so that current account deficit reduces. However, unfortunately, just because imports are costlier does not make them optional for IN as most of our imports are on account of oil. So rupee depreciation instead of reducing deficit actually increases deficits. Regarding where can it stop, nobody is sure. Let us be clear, RBI does not have a ton of dollars to prevent the depreciation. It is just throwing good money after bad. Forex reserves thaggi povatam kante vorigedhi emi ledu. Inka enti ante, you really can't pump in dollars (and suck out rupees) without increasing inflation. At the levels of inflation that we are in, we can't afford to increase inflation rates further. Another way to increase forex flows is to increase interest rates so that international funds can come in to take advantage of higher rates. But our interest rates are already high and only recently the RBI has cut them a bit. So malli RBI rates increase chese scope thakkuva. Fundamentally we have been caught in the classic economists' trilemma - in an open economy (which we relatively are) you can't control exchange rate and interest rates at the same time. Something has to give, now it is exchange rate. If we try to control exchange rates, then interest rates might become crazily high. | ||
