Dont discourage him - he is right. Success in academic research is very dicey and luck plays more important role than anything else. I am also seriously considering to switch to clinical practice. Industry jobs are big nada, unless he has huge network and lives in industry hub areas. The further he dwells in research, more difficult would be his transition. Historically scientific research has never been a 'job' per se. It was a hobby of rich people or people who had rich patrons. Unless he has big network, its very hard to find positions in industry, especially for academic postdocs. | ||

I am still academic field and i have no idea about pvt companies...genentech lanti konni companies unnayi...he can expect 80-100k mimimum regarding changing fields every body's advice will be not to switch to IT....after all u have spent half u r life doing research on the other hand science research is a donkey's job...all work and no pay u keep working and working and even then there will be no satisfaction in terms of money....this advice was from my boss last year when i joined his lab as post doc... it is very hard to get into pvt companies or industry based on research as there is much discrepancy in the kind of work being done...academic research is mostly geared towards publishing papers and not towards making money from the research industry has no tolerance for such kind of research | ||

yeah.. he went through that tedious process of getting clearances from indian govt etc. he is asking me whether he should switch career to IT... i am asking him to stay put for some more time as he has already invested 10-12 years in this fiehld... but he says there won't be any change even after publishing dozen papers... he worked on cancer related research for most part i guess. switching from J1 to H1 is a very lengthy process... you have deal with the Indian govt and US for the waiver...takes 6 months at least so plan ahead and start the paperwork if his J1 is going to end next year...regarding applying for GC after J1 to H1 transition, no idea | ||

If he is on J1 then he can work for 4 years ...after that he has to apply for a waiver to shift to h1. Has he completed that, if so he can start looking for jobs . People will hire you on J1 even in industries | ||
