With reference to your alaksa trip last year, the big question i have is 1. Where to stay and how long to stay so that we dont have keep pack/unpack the luggage. Neeki trip: Day 1: Flew to Anchorage. Spent the evening at 'Point Woronzof' in the city. It was a cool place with a view of mountains, water and planes flying over head. Had dinner at City Diner - Their milkshakes are to die for. Day 2: Visited Portage glacier in the morning. This glacier is located about 50 miles south of Anchorage. The drive on Seward highway towards the glacier is breathtaking and serves as the perfect introduction to alaskan scenery (Sample pics - http://tinypic.com/r/2ibi0d4/7 http://tinypic.com/r/ddi7mc/7 http://tinypic.com/r/i1i8at/7 http://tinypic.com/r/2sakmbk/7 After reaching Portage valley, we took a 1 hr cruise on Portage lake to visit the glacier. The valley itself was BEAUTIFUL with great views of mountains, wild flowers and portage lake. And the glacier is even better. It is an actively calving glacier. Claving is the phenomenon in which a glacier sheds huge chunks of ice into the water. The thunderous and crackling sounds that emanate out of a glacier before it calves are incredible. It sounds as if a 1000 shot guns went off in close proximity. Sample pic of the glacier - http://tinypic.com/r/4q2d51/7 We then started our drive to Denali National Park - 225 miles north of Anchorage. We took about 8 hours to do the 4 hr drive, stopping at every corner for photos. It was a good drive but I liked the scenery towards Portage glacier better. People usually take the scenic train to Denali but I chose to drive to enjoy a little more freedom. Our cabin in Denali was right by a creek and it was awesome. The only thing we could hear was the sound of the flowing creek. Day 3: Took a full day Shuttle into the interior of Denali National Park. Saw lots of wild life (nearly 10 bears, golden fox, dall sheeps, caribou etc) on our way and the views from shuttle bus were amazing. Never seen such an expansive land scape. Mt McKinley was out of clouds for a while but I didn't find it any different to the other mountains that we saw along the way. sample denali pics: http://tinypic.com/r/es20xg/7 http://tinypic.com/r/64qef9/7. From Denali Park, I drove down towards anchorage and took the Glenn Highway to stop over at Matanuska Glacier for some ice trekking. It paid off v v well!! Day 4: Took the scenic Glenn Highway and drove to Glacier View. The view of Matanuska Glacier (one of the v few glaciers accessible by land) was out of the world. This glacier, though accessible by road, is in the middle of nowhere and hence is not frequented by a lot of tourists. That's why the glacier looked beautiful and untouched. Sample pic - http://tinypic.com/r/25qswp1/7 . We did the 3 hr guided trek on the glacier and it was one of the highlights of our trip. It was unreal to walk on a pristine glacier and see the blue colored glacial pools, holes, ice caves and crevasses up close. You could see ice melting and forming crystal clear streams on the glacier. Also you could hear ice crackling and collapsing around you. Sample pics - . http://tinypic.com/r/35i6dqa/7 - glacial pool http://tinypic.com/r/p90yo/7 - glacial stream http://tinypic.com/r/wrhlaa/7 - crevasse http://tinypic.com/r/353edz4/7 - me trying to ascend an ice wall http://tinypic.com/r/2yyyq9f/7 - miles of such compressed blue ice..remnants of ice age http://tinypic.com/r/mw61yb/7 - glacial pool clicked by wify Another highlight was our cabin overlooking the valley and glacier. Wish we had more time at this place. Day 5: Coninued our drive from matanuska towards Valdez. This entire drive was v v v scenic. sample pic - http://tinypic.com/r/1hxc7p/7 - view of nelchina glacier by glenn highway..ee spot ARUPULU anthe.....crisp alaskan air, deserted roads, breath taking scenery.. Specially Richardson highway was drop dead gorgeous. We visited another glacier - Worthington glacier on our way to Valdez. This is a v easily accessible roadside glacier which was good but by no means comparable to Manatuska glacier. Did a short hike to the face of the glacier and moved on. Rested for the night in Valdez - a v v small, charming, funny looking town - unlike any other place in the US. this is the highlight of our trip....life changing experience annattu..valdez lo kayaking between towering glacial bergs left by columbia glacier......ee kayaking lo unna PEACE antha intha kadu..mind lo F5 million times nokkinattu Day 6: Undoubtedly the highlight of our trip. A full day kayak trip to Columbia glacier. This is the 2nd largest tide water glacier which calved so much ice that 6-9 miles of the bay is flocked with TOWERING ICE BERGS (some bergs are as big as 2-3 storeyed buildings). The water in the bay is v v v calm so allowing for an easy kayak. It was mind numbing to kayak between these HUUUUGE BLUEE ice bergs towering over you. Some bergs collapsed right in front of our eyes making huge crackling noises. maatho patu inko thella pair unde, vallaki pack..bay lo ki enter avvagane peyyydda ice berg virigi padindi generating a big wave.... Sample pics - http://tinypic.com/r/345d361/7 http://tinypic.com/r/34ta7p1/7 http://tinypic.com/r/2lnkfvl/7 highlight entante, the bay is FULL OF SEA LIFE including seals, sea lions and sea otters....seals kontha dooram kayaks ni follow ayyai..it was incredibly funny to watch them get all curious.......ice bergs meeda sea lions, seals relax autu untai We kayaked for hrs b/w the bergs and broke for lunch on the moraine of the glacier. View of the bay from our lunch location..also moraine meedaki ice bergs kottukuni ostai in sizes and shapes....aa sample pics kuda kinda unnai http://tinypic.com/r/2q3xhe1/7 http://tinypic.com/r/21brdd/7 http://tinypic.com/r/27zismx/7 http://tinypic.com/r/hrar6h/7 http://tinypic.com/r/zmfgjq/7 http://tinypic.com/r/ilw28l/7 lunch tarvata tanivi teere daaka inko 2-3 hrs kayaking chesi poyam.. Day 7: Took the ferry from Valdez to Whittier along with the car. The ferry ride was good with nice view of Chugach mountains and wild life (sea lions, seals). We drove to Seward from Whittier. We stopped at Portage valley mid-way and did a hike to Byron Glacier. The hike was good with nice views and the glacier was fun. It had a soft face and people were sliding from top to bottom. Ikkada fotos keka untai.. Day 8: Took a 6 hr wild life cruise into Kenai Fjords national park. Saw countless Orca whales (shamus), sea lions, seals, puffins and Some humpback whales (these guys were HUUUUGE). Sample wildlife pics: http://tinypic.com/r/f0c8pi/7 - whales http://tinypic.com/r/f0c8pi/7 - sea lions Also the cruise halted at yet another huge tide water glacier - Aialik glacier. Pic - http://tinypic.com/r/33zb8rc/7 The sounds from this glacier were na bhu na bha. It felt like a war field with tanks and firangees firing all over the place. Amazing glacier. I would do a kayak tour here just for the wild life..heard stories abt humpback whales circling kayaks should be fun After the cruise, we did a hike to Exit glacier. It was huge but dirty. Theys said it receeded a lot in recent years. Sample pic - http://tinypic.com/r/2z900uh/7 Day 9: Took a 3 hr dog sled tour and learnt all about dog sleds, got to ride a 2 mile track with the dogs, met and petted a lot of those dogs and puppies. Being a dog lover, I had a blast and was amazed at the strength of the dogs. After the dog tour, we visited Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Center on our way back to Anchorage. They hosted a show with one and half year old brown bear cubs and it was HILARIOUS. I'll post some videos later.. In this db, there's always someone watching you!! |
