Epson 3010 ($1500) + denon 2112 ($600) + PS3 ($250) + Boxee ($180) + plus cable and sundry. Ippdu cheppu. Under $500 PC affordable or not.

On a serious note. Boxee box is not great for local streaming.

Do you know that Denon receiver you have, has ethernet port? Connect it to router and you can stream music from any PC, iTunes, iPhone, internet stations etc. You don't need to power on TV/Proj., can control directly from receiver.

Mrhyderabad:

Can we build a HTPC to do all this?

This is the most safest option which covers all the media types. You don't need to build any. Just buy any off-the-shelf PC with desktop style case (opposed to tower style). Make sure you have video card with HDMI-out. If you want, you can drop a TV-tuner card in empty PCIExpress slot. Under $500 you can decent machine (don't go crazy with processor/memory/storage)

yeah PS3 - Tverity transcoding tho too many issues.

Edaina manchi idea ivvandi. Req - Should stream home media (audio, video, pics etc) effortlessly, BR playback, NetFlix etc. Can we build a HTPC to do all this? How much would that cost?

Or Boxee konna but didn't open it yet. Unable to stream home media through Roku 2 XS.

I agree with navigation on PS3. It sucks big time. What I do is, on the NS I create a folder for each movie and put video file in there (instead of dumping everything in one folder). I have MyMovies plug-in running on the server. When I add a new video, it created metadata (xml file) and saves in that folder. This folder organization also works nice, when I watch movies on BD player (DLNA client) from other room.

they are not in one folder bro. I have them in different folders by video name. by folder navigate chesthe, PS3 no media files (exact message kaadhu). but in the list of video files available on server, it shows the file as one among the hundred media files. i will try mymovies plug in work out avuthadhemo choostha

It's a hit or miss with PS3. Not much we can do with format support. Only way I know if to convert the videos to compatible format.

It's voodoo spell, maaaan. :-)

Mrhyderabad:

Wireless extender okati basement lo av rack vunna closet lo petta. before extender speedtest chesthe 25 Mbps.. with extender 5 Mbps vasthundi. why ? in-compatible extender? just a bad piece?

I am not a fan of wireless extenders. They don't work as advertised. Do you have an ethernet cable running into basement from router. If so, set a wireless access point, instead. It is much more reliable than extender.

Mrhyderabad:

Which is better in your opinion?

Does not matter. Since PS3 can decode HD audio like TruHD, DTS-HD, DD+, even PCM can output the right signal. For these codec, you are supposed to listen in default mode on AVR. Any Surround Mode you apply on receiver defeats the purpose of master audio. If you are feeding stereo signal to AVR, you can try different audio modes to upscale to 7 channels from AVR.

Personally, I just set the HDMI audio out on PS3 to Bitstream. Let the receiver decode everything.

What are you playing on PS3? In PS3 General Settings -> Audio, under Optical Output set the format as bitstream. For HDMI Audio, you can either set bitstream or PCM. In case of PCM, PS3 decodes the signal.

Which is better in your opinion? I am mostly playing BR disks or Vudu / netflix movies.

If i select PCM then AVR always show multi-in on the screen and i can only select surround sound as PL cinema II etc. I don't get DD or DTS or DD trueHD etc

Mav,
Naaku anta idea ledu. Simba best choice for such Qs. Nenu edo small size setup chesukunna.. no in-built wiring etc as ours is not SFR

Mrhyderabad:

Is this bcoz of hdmi control ON feature in both devices?

When i turn off the projector, avr also switches off.

Yes, it is called HDMI-CEC to control connected devices via HDMI.

Mrhyderabad:

AVR madhyalo vundi and that is turned off

A/V passthrough via HDMI is the new feature in receivers.

Mrhyderabad:

I have set the PS3 audio output as bitstream and it works. AVR displays all the decoded signals. But next time if i turn ON avr first and then ps3... audio is coming as PCM. Is my AVR forcing PS3 to output in PCM format? Is that possible?

What are you playing on PS3? In PS3 General Settings -> Audio, under Optical Output set the format as bitstream. For HDMI Audio, you can either set bitstream or PCM. In case of PCM, PS3 decodes the signal.
