A night out on cruise deep into the backwaters of Kerala. Night slowly crawling into your `3bhk’ houseboat anchored along a patch of land lined with coconut trees. There is only water and just water all around with silhouettes of coconut trees ornamenting the lagoons on far ends and by the time you breathe in one of the most memorable evenings, you are drenched soul deep into the silence of night.

In fact, it was a 24-hour long trip in the backwaters which started at around noon. After lunch, we were somewhere near the Alappuzha Sports club overlooking the Arabian sea when the weather changed its mood. Grey-black dense clouds surrounded us and it started raining, the light conditions deteriorated and the boatmen decided to call it a day and searched for a safe place to anchor for the night. The night halt was at some unknown patch of land, you got down to feel the darkness around, tall grass and only the whispers of wind conversing with water. You felt submerged.

These backwaters surround the brackish lagoons parallel to the Arabian sea. The houseboats (kettuvallams) are very comfortable with thatched roof covers over wooden hulls. They normally have two or three air conditioned bedrooms with attached toilets and a dining--sitting lounge at the front deck and at extreme back is the kitchen. The food is traditional, cooked on board by the staff.

Morning was more cheerful than any sunny morning could be, the expanse of nature was abound, miles and miles of water dotted by small fishing boats, green patches of land. In fact when I got out of the boat in the morning, I realised I had slept on God’s lap. Long stretches of white lotuses bloomed in front of me and I don’t know how long I and my camera kept inhaling in ecstasy. After breakfast it was time to move back to our real world. Though I tried my best to take some of this world with me, I guess you have to be there to seep in those moments.
