Interview Street began as a college project at NIT, Tiruchirapalli. The founders Ravisankar and Harishankaran, both 24 years old, set up a forum for mock interviews with college students during placement season, helping to filter out promising candidates from the larger pool. On graduating, they were hired by Amazon and IBM, respectively, but continued to work on their start-up idea in their free time. In July 2009, they quit their jobs and sought mentoring from The Morpheus, a Chandigarh-based seed fund. But even this boost was not sufficient. "They were not getting any traction even after working on it for many months," says Morpheus co-founder Sameer Guglani, who observed that they were, however, not ready to abandon the venture. Instead the two friends locked themselves up in a room for 10 days and launched Interview Street in December 2010. "I had spoken to a number of companies and figured out that their biggest issue was entry-level hiring," says Ravisankar. Companies looking to hire coders and programmers have no use for resumes that can be creatively constructed without relation to actual skills the candidate might possess. Yet this is the only resource a company has at the first stage of hiring. Their product, called Recruit, solves this problem by allowing companies to invite applicants to try solving a coding challenge online, which is set by either the company seeking to hire or the start-up itself. So close is the competition in the technology start-up space that while awaiting their turn to be interviewed by Y Combinator, the young entrepreneurs from Interview Street found that another applicant had a similar idea. "But Vivek and Hari had clients and revenues. They had validated their product," says Vijay Anand, founder of The Start-up Centre in Chennai, an incubation centre which played host to Interview Street for a short spell this year. "Revenues and customers. That is the moral of the story," says Anand. |

https://www.interviewstreet.com Many employers these days are now hiring based on the individual's performance on this website. Looks like a good strategy. |
