Media is focusing largely on the political angle but they are not asking whether the accusations are true or not. |

What's common between CBI's Andhra Pradesh chief VV Laxminarayana and YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy? Both of them get very flustered when women reporters are jostled around in the crowds that surround them. Women reporters, including yours sincerely, appreciate the fact that one strong glare from both these men, helps in restoring the oxygen passage amidst that suffocating group of cops, security guards and fans! (FYI: This CBI director has a facebook fan page!) Ei comedy endi saami.... Sensation(About Bala):He can win in atleast half of the segments in Rayalaseema. Emi matladutunnavo neeku telusa. He can contest any where in coastal and rayalaseema districts. I personally feel he should contest from Srikakulam dt. |

(FYI: This CBI director has a facebook fan page!) But that's where that small patch of common ground ends. For then, they are placed on opposite sides of law but fighting what seems to be a political battle. While the CBI director has been granted Y category security (reportedly under threat from the mining mafia), Jagan has found no such favour with the ruling Congress at the state and at the Centre. Jagan stands as accused no 1 in CBI's chargesheet (filed on 31st March) in his illegal assets case, followed by his auditor Vijay Sai Reddy, already in CBI custody, and his business investors like Aurobindo & Hetero Pharma. Suspended IAS officer BP Acharya also finds himself at the 9th spot in this list of dubious distinctions. I know it's easy to wave this off as yet another big scam, a few drops maybe in the bottomless ocean of corruption and money laundering. But look closer, and you'll find the battle lines, the fight strategy and friend-&-foes, are all decided inside what we usually call, the 'corridors of power'. All my conversations with the Congress leaders in the state have ranged in the extremes. Any state Congressman either hates Jagan or sympathises with him to no end. There is no in-between. Sonia Gandhi has ensured that. Yes, there are those who have been caught between their political ambition and loyalty to Jagan's late father and former chief minister YSR Reddy... but it doesn't take a genius to guess which the preferred choice is! When he walked out of the Congress party in Nov 2010, Jagan Reddy did what no one thought was possible: upset the stability of the very strong Congress base in Andhra Pradesh. YSR's legacy was being fought over and Jagan did not forget the lesson his father taught him: The power centre is not Delhi, it lies with the masses. Almost 3 years after his father and one of the most popular chief ministers of the state died in a helicopter crash, Jagan continues to meet families as part of his Ödarpu (condolence) yatra, hugging women and children who shed tears for his father and speaking of Congress' angst against him. While trailing him on many of these yatras, I have observed how well Jagan has used his business acumen to capitalise on the YSR goodwill. He visits people, sits in their huts and speaks of change (with his TV crew of Sakshi duly telecasting his every move). Reminds you of another uncrowned prince/yuvraaj, doesn't it? These three years of road campaigns are now yielding results. The Congress seems to be on back foot. They know they have to stop the growing clout of this man among the public, but they also know... any legal move, a la a CBI arrest will only put the sympathy factor in Jagan's kitty! The Congress cannot afford that. After being routed in the recent March by-polls in Telangana, it cannot lose ground in Andhra and Rayalseema regions. Yes, it will raise the corruption flag against Jagan, do an attack-and-retreat through CBI, and pacify its legislators from deflecting to the YSR Congress party... but will that suffice? Jagan on the other hand, claims to have the support of his father's goodwill (and fear) spread over vast regions of Andhra and Rayalseema. He has the money power (richest MP, declared assets of Rs 345 crore in 2011). He is seen as an emerging force against the Telugu Desam and the Congress. He is shrewd, he keeps his cards close to the chest and is a very real threat. Post the chargesheet, his offensive has been on the lines of exclusion of Congress ministers in the list of accused. He questions CBI's logic of investigating govt orders passed in his father's regime (2004-2009), allegedly favouring him (quid pro quo), without accusing any of the cabinet ministers who passed those orders along with YSR. Is he the only target? Is he going to pay the price of taking on the Congress? And about the Impending Arrest... well, history says it's a small price to pay for harbouring the ambition of the chief minister's post! Who'll blink first? Who'll make the first move? Congress or Jagan? Checkmate! PS: Eighteen constituencies of Andhra and Rayalseema region of AP go for by-polls in May 2012. The seats fell vacant after Jagan loyalists were suspended from the Congress for anti-party activities like publicly supporting him. Interestingly, the polls seem as much a litmus test for the problem-plagued Congress as they do for Jagan's fledgling YSR Congress party. Andharuu Baagundaali. |
