Jagan Mohan Reddy’s disproportionate assets case, officials have stated. With a capacity to house 650, Chanchalguda jail has 670 inmates as of Monday, while Charlapally jail with a capacity of 1,800 prisoners is filled to capacity. Officials said the two jails between them housed the accused in Obulapuram mining scam and Emaar township scam under the CBI’s probe, besides those involved in the ACB’s liquor scam. “If we begin arrests in the (Jagan) case, it would run into a big number,” a CBI investigator said. “We named 13 accused, including Jagan, in the first chargesheet. Once all chargesheets are filed the number of accused would be nearly 100.” Chanchalguda jail superintendent Keshava Naidu said they had already written to the ACB court requesting it not to send the accused, since the case did not come under their jurisdiction. “We are already lodging more inmates than our capacity. The court has to decide (if accused in this latest case would be lodged at Chanchalguda),” he said. Mr Naidu said the new barracks at Chanchalguda were not yet available to lodge inmates. Charlapally jail superintendent Srinivasa Rao said they, too, had more than their capacity of inmates. “It is for the court to decide which judicial custody to send the accused on remand,” he said. While arrest or bail to suspects in Aurobind-Hetero chargesheet is to be decided by court, the CBI can make arrests in the other cases. |
