Reentry - i have seen the Host. Have the Mother DVD, have to get around to watching it. I want to tackle Park Chan Wook next - i was stunned by Old Boy. Have to see the Vengeance movies now. @Filmbuff: Good job... 12 movies in a weekend... The maximum number of movies I saw in a weeked was 8... Anyway, this weekend movies... And then there were None (1945) - Classic Agatha Christie's Whodunit The Last of Sheila (1973)- Very good Whodunit Cube (1997) - Decent movie Ronin (1998) - Not so great movie... Being a bachelor boy after family went to Hyd, spent the long Ugadi weekend seeing 12 movies. 1) Kahaani - fantastic movie, great screenplay, photography, editing. Screenplay had a bit of loopholes. But easily one of the best Hindi movies i have seen of late (i rarely see Hindi movies though). Nawazuddin chimpesaadu. 2) Up in the Air - Jason Reitman scripts are fantastic. 3) Heart in Winter - Old French movie. Emmanuelle Beart and Daniel Auteuil. Many people confuse non-acting with understated acting. See Auteuil's performance here to truly understand what understatement is. 4) Memories of Murder - another Bong Joon Ho classic. A bit like Fincher's Zodiac. 5) Outrage (Japanese - Takeshi Kitano) - came highly recommended by a friend. But i was a bit underwhelmed. Not that the violence affected me, but the violence seemed to be the primary purpose. In fact, i turned out to be right. Read on the net later that Takeshi first thought of different ways of killing people and then wrapped a story around it. It makes Scorcese and Tarantino look like Walt Disney. 6) Midnight in Paris - by my all time favourite. One of the the Woody Allen's of late. But it covers ground that Allen has already covered earlier in movies like Zelig or Purple Rose of Cairo. After all the gore i saw over the weekend, this was a welcome relief 7) Drive - truly the best English movie i saw over the weekend. A modern day Western of a man without a name, an intense crime and romance drama. Very little dialogue, great atmosphere and music. Stunner. Warning - again a lot of gore. 8) Man on wire - a Oscar winning documentary 9) Delicatessen - a French black comedy. Not exactly to my taste. 10) 3-Iron - a nice little whimsical Korean romance where the protagonists do not even speak to each other through the movie. Loved the music. 11) Audition (Japanese - Takashi Miike) - i can stand some horror, but this was too gut wrenching even for my strong innards. I stared away from the scene a couple of times. Totally unsettling and brilliant build up. 12) Local Hero - a 30 year old movie. Lovely soft touch environmentalism, nice sketched quirky characters, nice acting. See it for the characterisation more than anything. All in all - a nice long weekend. Bit too much of blood though. |
