The only neigborhoods which took major hit were, low income neighborhoods -- Lynn,Chelsea,Charlestown,Southie and so on. burbs lo new constructions also slowed down but were not as disastrous as these neigborhoods. | ||

Dallas/Texas is vast, population in Norteast is concentrated and as Boston is a historical city people take pride in where they live as every stupid street has some kind of history associated with it. Apart from student population, Young Profesionals push the rents up - I work for a Buy side firm/Management Consulting/ Start up Tech firm on the other side of the river in Cambridge,I am an MBA from Ivy, I live on Beacon Hill, I drive an Audi and Play Golf at Stow Acres counrty club is the common theme. And please do not compare student population in Boston to Dallas. | ||

How come rentals in Dallas are comparatively less than Boston ? Dallas has got more or less same number of colleges. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dallas_%E2%80%93_Fort_W orth_area_colleges_and_universities Whatever it may be, Cost of Living in North East is higher than other regions of the country. I lived in a Apartment in a Ghetto locality in the Philly suburbs for 2 months and I still had to pay $1000 rent every month and daily parking tickets. | ||

I live in Somerville, right on Broadway, a mile away from all the happening squares - Davis,Porter,Inman,Union,Central,Harvard. The reason for higher rentals in Boston is because we have 50 Univ/Collges in and around boston, student population pushes the rents up. Some parts of Cambridge are more expensive than Boston. | ||

A slew of surveys are pointing to rising rents, especially in the Boston area, where apartments have never come cheap. The median rent in the Hub is now $1,834 - the fifth highest in the country - I noted in a recent po... And even that won't get you far these days, veterans of the local rental market will tell you. Check out these comments from a couple of apartment dwellers who have clearly seen it all and were not impressed with the $1,834 median rent number. It wasn't too high - rather it was too low! The reality is, if you want something beyond a worn out 1970s leftover, it costs a lot more than that. Writes Mggio: - $1800 rent on a $100k salary is doable but tight. It's almost impossible if you have a car payment/student loans/credit card debt. You won't be able to save for house down payment paying that kind of rent and if you do, you won't be saving for retirement. $100k is a great salary for a single person though and is far above "average". - If you are married perhaps with a kid and need a two-bedroom, expect to pay at least $2,500 for something decent. Your $100K salary no longer will cut it. You really don't want to life in a 2 bed priced under $2k a month, not even in Allston, Cambridge or Somerville. |
