the way weed killers work is, the granules get stuck on the wet surface of the broad leaf. only then they are effective. the reason they kill only weed is not chemical, mechanical. the grass blad is too thin for the granules to be stuck. this means two things, if you apply the weed killer when it is hot and dry or before the weeds are actually born, you have dumped the weed killer in the dirt. two, they do not (in usual amounts) affect the roots or new seedlings. now, there is a twist. there is something called crab grass preventer. the way this works is, it acts only on the new seedlings by forming a chemical coat over the ground surface. if your application included this, you have to wait for 4 weeks before you can over seed. there is a fertilizer called starter fertilizer. it is beetr to use that when you are over seeding. unless the lawn is too sparse or unsightly, it is best to overseed in the early fall. overseeding it now will not be effective. the temperatures and are not optimum for the seedling. the spring growth is too thick for the ground to get warm enough for the new seed to be born. High summer is also similar problem too hot and the seedling will die. do not waste your money with weed killer granules. buy the same stuff in liquid format and use it with a small hand sprayer and spray directly on the weed plant. most efficient way. but of course more laborious.
