I use it for bandwidth tracking,
if you have older kid you can restrict internet access to his computer and timing to browse etc...

wrt610n is old model by linksys. New model from cisco is E4200.

As most of my devices are hard-wired (at gigabit), I never see bandwidth throttle. Even on wireless devices, if you separate 2.4Hz and 5Ghz bands, there will be less interference. Works fine for me.

Installing dd-wrt firmware is first step. http://www.dd-wrt.com has loads of information for each router model.

Next, configure the device as wireless access point. See here

Connect the access point to primary router directly or via a switch. You can have access point serving client at different location than primary router.

Mrhyderabad:

which one are you using?

Linksys WRT610n (primary router)
Linksys WRT610n and 2 x Netgear WNDR3300 (access point using dd-wrt firmware)
Netgear DGS1008G (switch)

Access points are like routers, serves upto 4 wired clients plus wireless clients in the vicinity.

In 802.11 protocol, the signal range is strong vertically than horizontally. That means, if your router is in 1st floor, you get strong signal above and below than across the floor.

I placed the access points in such a way, they are far from each (in the floor plan) giving wifi coverage to whole house. Also, kept the same SSID/encryption on all, so my phone/laptop picks the signal from closest device, all seamless.

They have been updating firmware v2.1 to 2.4 in 5 years. It comes in different flavors like mini, normal, mega, vpn etc. Depending on router's available memory and hardware, you pick one of them. Using dd-wrt for past 5 years, works like charm.

Nope. Just average java programmer.

A good DOCSIS 3.0 modem costs at least $200. My ISP is cablevision.

There are some modems with router (and wireless) features built in. I believe, verizon offers one with FIOS service. It appears, there is a limit on no.of wireless clients you can connect.

Which begs the question, why all-in-one device. If there are separate, I can upgrade modem or router independently. If you want to put custom firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato on router, you cannot do on this all-in-one device.

Yes, I have 3 more wireless access points though out my house. They extend wifi coverage across the house, also serves wired client in the proximity. Let me know if you need help in setting them up.

For me, it is not worth buying my own modem shelling out $200 or more. I would rather rent from my ISP. In last 3 years, they changed my modem 3 times from DOCSIS 2.0 to 3.0. (I changed my plan from normal to boost to boost+). If I own my modem, I can't upgrade without putting money.
