functional programming ki math ki asalu sammandham ledu. the name is derived frm the property of a function. in any function, the parameters are finalized passed by value. the inputs are never changed when the funtion returns, only one value is returned by the function. the return value has to be stored in a new variable, because the parameters are already final. with this concept the whole language is designed. what this means is: var a = 0; // this is okay, but a is finalized by default. therefore a = a+1 is invalid. You have to say: var b = a+1; Since a is now only readable, hence "IMMUTABLE", this a can be used by any number of threads in any order without compromising the thread safety. Since every variable is immutable, the program can be multi threaded arbitrarily. This is the key benefit of functional programming. What this also means is: for (j=0; j < 10; j++) a=a+1; cannot be written.
