One of the series of emails dated July 21, 2009 from Stratfor says, “Watch power politics in Congress party, especially as Rahul Gandhi (son of Sonia Gandhi) is being groomed for a top position," reveals WikiLeaks. Against all the predictions, the UPA rose to power for the second term in 2009 and many leaders from the Congress party including Pranab Mukherjee, Digvijaya Singh and Jairam Ramesh declaring that Rahul was fit to become the PM. Rumors were doing the rounds during the time of Sonia's illness that the youngest in the Nehru-dynasty would step in as the prime minister of the country, reports Aman Sharma from India Today. Stratfor was asked to monitor the disputes in the government such as the constant flare-ups between the Congress and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) ever since TMC became an ally in UPA-II. "Monitor political rivalries between mainstream political parties (Congress, BJP) and second and third-tier parties that support ruling coalition. There is no need to get into the nitty gritty of this, but watch for large-scale defections and any major policy decisions by chief ministers of key states," the Stratfor email says. Stratfor email said India’s internal politics is dizzyingly complex and asked its informants for regular reports from key states such as Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. |
